Olsen Posted March 2, 2012 Author Share #24 Posted March 2, 2012 I am back from a exhausting business trip to Finland. Have been away for more than a week. But back to the cruise holiday: We have come to Paris. A chapter of it's own. First: My wife sucks in a little Paris atmosphere in our hotel room at Hotel Astrid. Welcome, dear visitor! Olsen Posted March 3, 2012 Author Share #25 Posted March 3, 2012 No trip to Paris is complete without a trip to the top of the Eiffel Tower. I haven't been there for many years: The huge number of tourists cuing to go up there is not encouraging. But this was in early January and outside the tourist season. It 'only' took about an hour to get to the top. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Olsen Posted March 3, 2012 Author Share #27 Posted March 3, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) The view from our hotel room looked like scene from a Jacques Tati film. Look at these classical Paris buildings across the street. Many of these are now in need of repair. And this one is being repaired. Thanks God. With a foot in the building industry I 'counted' restoring needs of these classical buildings in the tens of billions of Euros in Paris. I am wary about what will happen to these buildings. Will they be restored? Or teared down to be replaced by new glass & steel ones? Will the French make Paris look like - Oslo..? God forbid! Well. It is not a problem. France got a 20% unemployment among young people. So, they have a potential workforce to restore this beautiful city. But where shall the money come from? Why not just 'print up the money', like all nations did after WWII? Welcome, dear visitor! Olsen Posted March 3, 2012 Author Share #28 Posted March 3, 2012 Leaning out of the hotel room window and looking up the Avenue Carnot to show you the proximity of Hotel Astrid to the Arch de Triomphe. Olsen Posted March 3, 2012 Author Share #29 Posted March 3, 2012 A simple 'continental breakfast'. Simple, compared to the heartily British breakfasts we later should enjoy in Southampton and on board Black Watch. First time I stayed at Hotel Astrid, some 35 years ago, there was this charming old dark wood interior here. What happened to that? Welcome, dear visitor! Olsen Posted March 3, 2012 Author Share #30 Posted March 3, 2012 Nor is a visit to Paris complete without visiting one (or more) of the very nice restaurants. Seafood is Christmas food in Paris. But it was still ample with seafood available in early January. The best part of French seafood is the oysters. -The rest, shrimps, crabs and crayfish, we get better at home here in Norway. But the high quality of the French oysters more than make up for that. Welcome, dear visitor! Olsen Posted March 3, 2012 Author Share #31 Posted March 3, 2012 They had some mamuth creme brulee's, and very good, in Paris. Usually, they are less than half the size here in Norway. Olsen Posted March 3, 2012 Author Share #32 Posted March 3, 2012 Someone had parked his jet outside this beautiful Paris building. Smart. The Paris traffic was worse than ever. And far more polluted than ever due to the switch to diesel that is typical in Europe. At times it was choking. Note the glittering Eiffel Tower in the background seen from Arc de Triomphe. Olsen Posted March 3, 2012 Author Share #33 Posted March 3, 2012 Street photography in Paris is very much documentation of what is beautiful and pleasing to the eye. - Street photography should take on another meaning when we later got to Kairo and Mombay.... StephenPatterson Posted March 4, 2012 Share #34 Posted March 4, 2012 Someone had parked his jet outside this beautiful Paris building. Smart. The Paris traffic was worse than ever. And far more polluted than ever due to the switch to diesel that is typical in Europe. At times it was choking. Note the glittering Eiffel Tower in the background seen from Arc de Triomphe. That would be a Fouga Magister, and "interesting" French military jet trainer. Although retired from operational service there are a number of examples flying privately in Europe and America. Great images!!! My wife and I are really enjoying traveling vicariously through Europe with you both. Please keep up the good work, and travel safe!!! gbealnz Posted March 4, 2012 Share #35 Posted March 4, 2012 Wow, fantastic report, loved it, and loved the pictures, even the old Fougar slab-wing. We will be in Gay-Paris later this year, doing the Europe thing, also complete with cruise, so will do a similar thing, travel shots to bore the masses. M9 for me as well. No WATE though, heaven forbid!! Gary
Olsen Posted March 4, 2012 Author Share #36 Posted March 4, 2012 We Norwegians are easy to please: Flowers, green lawns and sunshine in January! Olsen Posted March 4, 2012 Author Share #38 Posted March 4, 2012 The Seine was flowing high. What caught our attention was this firework in the distance. Outside one of the court houses in Paris. Olsen Posted March 4, 2012 Author Share #39 Posted March 4, 2012 It was an union demonstration outside a the court house in connection to bankruptcy hearings of a ferry company operating across the British Channel. Olsen Posted March 4, 2012 Author Share #40 Posted March 4, 2012 ...and attention from the Genarmerie Nationale: A part of the French armed forces given police authority. I have problems with that. A national military force shall never be used against it's own people. Either you are a policeman or you are a military. - You don't mess with them, though. Welcome, dear visitor!
