Conundrum

I have my Leica's. Three Ms 1 M6TTl and two M7s. I have a selection of lenses, which for me, allow me to make images. I the world of digital I use another brand, Canon. I have their 4 and their 7D. Both are fine cameras and allow me sufficient latitude to get the exposures correctly. I also have a good selection of Canon AF lenses. Beginning with their incredible 200 f 1.8 USM, I have all three of their Macro lenses and numerous others. One thing I did for a buck was that as an editorial photographer. There are numerous high school and college texts with my photos helping to illustrate the whatever. Somewhere along the way, my photo rep advised that one photo made it into a children's book! Now retired, I can shoot what I want, when I want. I won't buy an M9 as there is no way to pay for it. My equipment was always purchased with the goal of its paying for itself.

You got a photo in a kids books and some shots in various college mags and now you are retired.

Does not sound like you did that much money making work with your cameras. That being the case, it sounds to me like you have more equipment than you need.Sell some and buy a s/h M8. A fantastic camera.

Conundrum solved.

You have all three Canon Macro lenses, three M6, but only two M7's and Canon bodies. I see your problem.

First I'd buy another M7 and make that a neat figure, then wait until Canon bring out the next DSLR and buy that. You will be well on your way to getting three of everything. Of course you only need to justify one camera if you want to earn money from it, the others are of course essential backups (;)), something wives never understand.

When you have three of everything, perhaps in a years time, you should put them all around your neck, put a fairy on top of your head, and declare yourself a fully decorated Christmas tree. I'm sure the psychiatrist will ask you how you can use nine camera's at the same time, but please refer them to LUF where there will be somebody with a smart answer.

I believe this is David Olson of Usable Images in Las Cruces. He has provided images for textbooks and various editorial content. And I believe he was implying that although he might like to have the M9, it's hard for him to rationalize buying one now that he's retired (and has always had a philosophy of making sure his equipment eventually pays for itself.)

Anyway, there's really no reason to be contemptuous just because someone might be having difficulty articulating what they are trying to say.

I agree and that certainly was not the way I responded. Clearly, from the information presented by the OP, the impression is given of ownership of more equipment than what could be deemed reasonable for the amount of use it gets. I stand by my response.

The sale of some of that equipment could fund a perfectly excellent M8.

The post following mine was rather demeaning I thought. I am sometimes surprised at the discourse at various times on the forum.

Anyhow David (OP). Consider my advice. If you are yet to venture into the world of Leica digital you are missing out. Sell some of that gear and give an M8 a go.

To the OP: Which cameras/combos produced your best work? Which do you enjoy using the most? Nothing wrong with keeping all of it, but how much gear do you need? Would you regret selling any of it? Although Canon is excellent, the M9 would allow you to use existing lenses with film and digital -- and would also be a lot lighter and more compact.

In that case the very fact that this is posted in the Film Forum surely means the OP wants to be persuaded to keep his film cameras, not sell any for an M8. Ask the same question on the M9 forum and you get the dangerous answer of 'sell them all and buy an M9'. Context is everything. I'd say to the OP 'if in doubt, don't'.
