robsteve Posted February 23, 2007 Share #121  Posted February 23, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) canonphobia as expected  Yes, and I am wondering why the fuss about a new Canon on this Leica forum. All the One series Canons have been top of the pack for their target market, sports, PJ, and some other professional use. I just don't see how it relates to Leica. All the One series Canons have been top of the pack for their target market, sports, PJ, and some other professional use. I just don't see how it relates to Leica. Â Â Because the R digital is being discontinued and you can (and I do) use R lenses on them? Also, for M guys, the SLR offers avenues not open to the M, so many of us own them, and...it is fun to see the new cameras and their capabilities (as in what new magic comes next)? - oh, also, it has a silent single shot shutter mode, and this would cause me to leave the relatively loud M8 behind and take this camera instead for certain events (concerts and recording sessions come to mind...). sdai Posted February 23, 2007 Share #124 Â Posted February 23, 2007 I think it's nice to open the window for some fresh air ... I'm already tired of all these dreaded M8 talks and took the plunge.

I know where you are coming from. I even used my big Leica lenses on a 1V to get the 10fps before the alternate guys even thought of it. It is just that the new 1D does not seem to be a ground breaker like the original 1D or 1Ds, just a refinement of the existing technology.

Guest guy_mancuso Posted February 23, 2007 Share #127 Â Posted February 23, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Bill the R digital is not being discontinued the DMR is and that is it. 2 days ago it was still king of the hill when it comes to image quality in DSLR's , two months from now it still will be. There has been no change to that but i agree with Rob this is not revolutionary camera. It has some nice fine features and will be a valuable tool but I am not expecting blow my socks off imagery from it. Why did I come back to this thread, I could just kick myself. macusque Posted February 23, 2007 Share #131 Â Posted February 23, 2007 Marco, there are some photographic applications where the highest possible quality is not always necessary. If that were the case we'd all be shooting large format rather than 35mm film or digital 35mm :-) Agreed ! Â But I didn't say highest possible quality, only adequate quality, like that from the old great 1Ds, giving the 1DIII sensor has almost the same resolution and it's five year younger! Â Anyway I'm stop talking about that Canon beast, I'm curious but that's all... back shooting with my beloved Leicas.

Guy,  I'm sorry, but I don't know the difference between the R digital and the DMR. I thought they were one and the same.  One thing I have noticed going from the 1Ds to the 1D2 and 1Ds2 is each succeeding camera is better and more refined than the previous model - better noise, predictive AF and so forth. I have the 1D2 and am not particularly tempted to buy the third version of the camera. The lighter weight and the silent shutter are interesting - if that is part of the 1Ds3 (or whatever they might name it), I might bite.
Guest guy_mancuso Posted February 24, 2007 Share #133 Â Posted February 24, 2007 I meant that does not mean there is not a R10 for instance coming so the R line is hopefully alive

billh Posted February 24, 2007 Share #135  Posted February 24, 2007 Bill, silent shutter! Listen to this (halfway through): Video Canon EOS 1D Mark III - Canon, EOS, 1D, Mark, III - Dailymotion Partagez Vos Videos  Not silent.  I saw that earlier today. Amazing, isn't it? The silent shutter is a special single shot mode you can set. It makes a lot of sense for certain press situations. I remember many years ago, we were only allowed to use Leicas in certain places because they were quiet.  I wonder where this technology will take us ten years from now? Or what the little kids of today will be using when they are our ages?
sdai Posted February 24, 2007 Share #136 Â Posted February 24, 2007 The silent mode is only in single shot mode ... reducing the noise from 77db to 70db. Big deal if you can tell the difference.

Big deal if you can tell the difference.  Um, isn't every difference of 3db effectively "half as loud" ? If you can't hear the difference between 77db and 70db, well, I think you'll need those ears checked  IOW, it's a lot of difference, and given the noise of the shutter at 10fps, I'm glad they made a quieter mode! Â Simon, got it about 10fps, I was just saying that if that's representative of the noise of the shutter, even in single shot mode, then you ain't got a silent shutter, is all.
