My understanding is they're still getting up to speed from that, and that ZE/ZF is taking priority. adan Posted December 22, 2011 Share #4 Â Posted December 22, 2011 Cosina is based in high mountains (Nagano prefecture - Winter Olympics and all that) on the opposite side of Tokyo (about 200 miles) from where the quake/tsunami/meltdown was centered. And roughly as far from the Thai flooding as Houston is from Manaus, Brazil. Â Likely explanation is the same as for Leica-made lenses - huge demand for anything that will fit on an M mount. I plan on taking it out a tomorrow just to see if I want to keep or sell it. It was a compulsive buy. I have not done any film ware updates yet, did not need to with the 50mm. 250swb Posted December 23, 2011 Share #8 Â Posted December 23, 2011 I suspect the lack of availability is down to two things, both of which mirror the situation with Leica lenses. a) It is a very good lens, and it is built in batches, so it is either feast or famine as regards stock on the shelves. Just as with Leica, you need to put your name on a list and see what the dealer can get. Â The new versions of the lens are built with the M in mind because they have a groove machined in the flange to take a coding mark (as do the newer CV lenses). So no need for special mounts etc. This may be worth considering if you see any earlier version for sale second hand, not that it affects the great optical qualities of the lens though. Â Except for the 85mm f4, every Zeiss M-mount lens goes to backorder when the order is placed. Right now I have 26 M-mount lens on order. I usually get about three a week. Â The lenses are made in batches but one batch wont catch up on the backorders. In conversations with Ziess (almost once a week) they have mentioned it would take three batches of 50mm f2 to catch up if no new orders were placed. They run a batch every three months or so. My oldest backorder and the hardest lens to get is the 28mm f2.8 in black. My backorder is one year old today, and it's not like they've forgotten about it, there are just none around. I've received two black 21mm f2.8 this fall and have two blacks and two silvers on backorder. Â There are a number of reasons..... huge success of the Nikon/Canon mount lenses keeps the plant busy, shortage and maybe the cost of Leica brand gear, but the big reason is the success of the mirrorless categories like the Sony NEX. Most of my orders go out with the adapter for the NEX or micro 4/3. These cameras are very successful but the number of prime lenses available is lacking so people add a Zeiss to their kit. Â Myself I've used a bunch of the lenses on the Sony NEX7 and use this camera in combination with my M9. I can see why the system is so successful, the camera body is the size of a deck or cards, and I can see why people want to add a nice prime to their kit. Â Zeiss has said they hope to be caught up in the new year, but at the dealer end people keep placing orders so the backorders are extending not getting shorter. My widest M lens is the 35 cron, so instead I went ahead and ordered the Voigtländer Super Wide Heliar 15mm F4.5. and the metal 15mm finder.  Maybe next time I'm ready to buy a lens Zeiss will have figured things out. StephenPatterson Posted December 24, 2011 Share #13 Â Posted December 24, 2011 I sold my Zeiss 21/2.8 Biogon just before my 21SEM arrived, and I received 90% of my purchase price, which is pretty amazing for non-Leica glass. I really enjoyed the Zeiss on my M8 and M9, but I'm glad I made the switch to the 21SEM. It's more compact, tack sharp wide open, and already 6-bit coded.
