WillD Posted January 2, 2012 Share #21 Â Posted January 2, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Of course; I've got both. I did post links above, but maybe you missed it. Â For more info and even a comparison: Planar T* 2/50 review C Sonnar T* 1,5/50 review Lens Shoot-out (50mm) Â Very different lenses until around f/4-5.6 where they're both relatively "modern and sharp." Â Thanks for the reminder Double Negative, I have read these great reviews and the comparison and continue to come down on the side of the Sonnar and its more 'artistic' look. Advertisement Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 Hi WillD, Take a look here Zeis Planar 50mm 2.0. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
WillD Posted January 2, 2012 Share #22 Â Posted January 2, 2012 Hi MarkP, Â Thanks for your thoughts on the Sonnar and other 50mm alternatives. Your description of its dreamy and painted look is exactly what I am looking for so I think it will go for the Sonnar over the Planar. I may also have to get used to what Fouble Negative calls 'Zen' focusing since I plan to use it both on my M6 and M9. Â Thanks again
MarkP Posted January 2, 2012 Share #23 Â Posted January 2, 2012 You're welcome, Â but do send it to Zeiss for adjustment. Â Mark
rscheffler Posted January 2, 2012 Share #24  Posted January 2, 2012 I can't say I've ever really had a problem with flare, even with the sun in/just out of the frame - but then I always use a hood with it. Typically, the ZMs are very good regarding flare in my experience. Third-party hoods are a good, cheap alternative to the Zeiss options. The only downside is the ZMs use a bayonet mount for the hoods, making installation and removal quick and easy... Something you'll compromise on with screw-in hoods. Check out the 43mm metal hoods from "Heavystar" on 'bay. On the downside, the [Zeiss] hoods don't reverse for storage in your bag.  No doubt the 50 Planar is an excellent lens and a great value for the money compared to Leica's options. But it will flare. Not necessarily the typical string of flare spots, but rather a loss of contrast. I posted some samples here in the Leica M9 thread on the FM forums.  BTW, the 50 Lux ASPH will also exhibit similar flare, based on what I've experienced having owned one now for about a month...   I bought one of these on ebay for $6 delivered. It has not arrived yet, but is worth a gamble....43mm Vented Curved Hood Zeiss C Biogon T* 35mm f2.8 ZM | eBay  I just received a couple of these from the same vendor. They're fine for the price. The paint finish feels like it's sprayed on and the 43mm hood's diameter is quite a bit less than the LH-6, but doesn't seem to cause vignetting with either the ZM35 f/2.8 or the ZM50 f/2 on the M9, though there is some with the CV40 f/1.4.  Ron
RobSkeoch Posted January 2, 2012 Share #25 Â Posted January 2, 2012 A few months back I posted a couple portraits with the Sonnar on my blog. The idea is to make the subject sharp and the background takes a nice soft look. Â You can find the blog here..... The Picture Desk: Leica M9 with the Zeiss Sonnar 50mm f1.5 Â A second blog also has portrait samples..... The Picture Desk: Using the 50mm Sonnar and M9 Â I've ordered a Planar 50mm for myself but it hasn't arrived yet since everything to do with rangefinders seems to be backordered. MarkP Posted January 2, 2012 Share #26  Posted January 2, 2012 Nice Rob. I did look at the Planar, but as I already have the 50 Summilux ASPH the Planar would have been redundant, unlike the Sonnar which is a very different lens.  Bill Palmer, well known outspoken forum member, bought the Sonnar and sold his Summilux ASPH as he prefers the former. A quick search will find some of his excellent work with this lens. Although I really like the Sonnar I can't come at selling my Summilux which with my 28 Summicron ASPH is one of my favourite lenses.  Photos with ZM C-Sonnar on M9:  http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/people/187967-guitarist.html  http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/architecture/187789-mlc-centre-sydney.html #2 only, (the others shot with 28 Summicron ASPH and 75 Summicron ASPH).  Mark
Double Negative Posted January 3, 2012 Share #27 Â Posted January 3, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks for the reminder Double Negative, I have read these great reviews and the comparison and continue to come down on the side of the Sonnar and its more 'artistic' look. Â Thanks! No worries. The Sonnar is just a "nice" lens, I love mine. It just has that nice signature to it, which is somewhat unique.
