So I stopped by the Leica dealer....

That's a "terrific program?" I have to lay a hundred bucks on the table in order to "see" a lens? I don't have to drop a C note on the table when I walk into a jewelry or Breitling store. I don't have to do that at the car dealer either when I go out for a test drive on something worth ten times the cost of a Leica lens (well, maybe not the Noctilux).

I would guess in this case, you get to use the lens for a whole day or two, as this would roughly equal the rental fees for some Leica lenses. I think this is a reasonable procedure as you are then able to get some real testing of the lens. Obviously just "seeing" a lens should be always possible and free - yet, what is it good for if you cannot do a real-life shooting with it?

I went to a local dealer to check out the M9 in person. Similarly, they "had one but I couldn't see it." Fine. I left and bought it elsewhere. ;)

Do you get to wear the Breitling for a day? Any dealer will let you take a few test shots inside or outside the store in my experience, but that is something quite different from renting one for the day.

No, you pay to use the lens-I.e., take it home from what I understood. Sorry, if I miscommunicated that point.

Ahh, okay. Yeah - seems I misunderstood. :o

That is actually a pretty cool program then. Another option is lensrentals.com where you can rent a lens (though it doesn't count towards a purchase). Either way, nice to be able to try out a lens before committing to it!

I'm surprised you did not buy it from the Leica dealer in my area. They called me when they received my M9, and even after I told them I was buying it they made me put on gloves to handle it. Since they had no lenses, I brought one of my own, but was not allowed to try it on the camera- had to leave the store. And at that point I had recently bought a Nikon 200-400 as well as quite a bit of other equipment.

Ironically, I could handle any Nikon or Canon equipment. Maybe it is just the "mystique" of Leica.... ;)
