16 months with M8

This is my first post. So it is my hello to this forum and I shorty describe my way to digital Leica M.

Having used Leica in the film days (my beloved M5 is still working fine), I went Canon dslr for digital. After lugging around with a couple of lenses, I felt my enthusiasm for photography was endangered. Having realized the problem I found myself going out for shooting with the dslr and just one lens, the 35L. Nice combo, not too big, not too heavy, seemed ok. But using dslr I somehow missed being in command, I missed the old M5-feeling. Tons of functions, automatics, … then I used manual exposure override and wanted to turn it off, I did not manage without the manual …

I like simple cameras, that I can control without studying manuals for hours… and I like framing with rangefinders, which in my view supports composition a lot.

Then M9 appeared in 2009, outrageously expensive, I was infected, read a lot (thanks to this wonderful forum) and finally got my digital M: An M8. That was about 16 month ago.

What a simple to use camera, what clean files, thanks to the missing anti-alias-filter! After all these months using it, I still feel at home with my M8. In the meanwhile I acquired a 28 Summicron, what a wonderful lens!

Somehow I seem to gravitate to those Ms, that many others regard odd: M5, which is build like a tank, and M8. I have no intentions to upgrade to M9 in the near future.

Today I read an old thread about the perfect travel kit. Interesting, that most of the posters in that thread seem to take a couple of lenses on their trips. Of course everybody has his own intentions and needs. My dream travel kit will be M8 and one lens 28 Summicron for a some time to come.

Sometimes, something wider would be nice for landscape … SEM18? … ;-)

E1K3, Welcome to the Forum!

It is pleasant reading such a positive first thread from a new member. Usually a first posting contains lots of questions!

Regarding lens choice, I found a 21mm lens (Elmarit) worked very well for me on the M8, giving approximately a 28mm equivalent on full frame. Your possible choice of 18mm would be backed by many who favour that focal length. I have nothing wider than 21mm.

Your 28mm is equivalent to about 38mm full-frame. In due course you might consider getting a lens more suited to portraiture and landscape details. So, if that situation should arise, consider a 75 or 50mm. Either would carry forward if the day comes when you choose to go 'full-frame'

Meanwhile, continue to enjoy your M8 and do post some pictures.
