plasticman Posted February 21, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted February 21, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Transferred at Schipol (Amsterdam) on my way down to Barcelona at the weekend, and looked-in on the Leica dealer in the airport terminal. The incredible price for the M8 they have in stock there (all taxes paid, the very helpful assistant assured me) saves between 9.000 - 10.000sek on the price in Sweden (that's about $1,400 incidentally). Â Camera was black. They've sold two so far apparently.
Hans Roggen Posted February 21, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted February 21, 2007 How much is an M8 in Sweden? Â Hans
plasticman Posted February 21, 2007 Author Share #3 Â Posted February 21, 2007 42.500sek. Which approximately converts to $6000 at current rates. (5,994.32 USD according to one online exchange rate converter). Â Of course there are factors that can make these differences irrelevant. If i were still self-employed, then i'd be buying the camera here and thereby offsetting both income tax and so-called 'value-added' taxes (called 'moms' here, funnily enough). Â Quite honestly, if the new apartment didn''t need a new kitchen i'd have bought the darn thing there and then. The saving just seemed too good to be true. Â The camera looks a beaut btw... bohtho Posted February 21, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted February 21, 2007 As the price for the M8 in Norway is about the same as in Sweden, we can save even more on buying it on Schiphol. Because we can get the EU Vat reimbursed at the airport and then unbox it and put it in the bag before entering Norway (outside of the EU). Not that anyone should do that of course.... markku Posted February 21, 2007 Share #5  Posted February 21, 2007 T between 9.000 - 10.000sek on the price in Sweden (that's about $1,400 incidentally). Camera was black. They've sold two so far apparently.  I was there as well;) The price was €3.599. I was tempted but I decided to stay loyal to my dealer and still wait for my own which is chrome version and does not have anyone's finger prints on it;) So for the rest of the Europe the saving is appx 600 euros.  Interestingly they had one summicron 75 as well for €2.019. This was appx €300 discounted.  I tried the combo, M8+Summicron 75 and for me it was difficult to verify how accurate the frame line was for 75mm. As I was carefully shooting the DVD packages in store just inside the 75mm frame line the resulted picture showed actually half of the next DVD package which I intentionally left outside of frame lines.  Weird. I don't actually know whether the frame line accuracy is at that level in general or is just M8 which has inaccurate frame lines? I've never done any testing of that with my M6. I asked if that was the only colour they had, which they said yes. So I opted to buy the black until I noticed a small scratch on it, The guy was very nice and looked in his computer and found they had another in the stock room, 20 min later he returned sad faced "Sir I regret to inform you that the other one we have in stock while it says black on the box is actually silver". "Perfect, I'll take it and a 75 Summicron" I replied. I must have saved my self €900.  So now you know where 1 went
plasticman Posted February 22, 2007 Author Share #7 Â Posted February 22, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Most amazing for me was seeing the little baby in the flesh at last - seemed rather strange after months of waiting lists to simply see it in a glass case, and in an airport of all places. Â Unfortunately i had neither the time to handle it, nor the money to buy it just then. A fact that i had plenty of time to regret while at the photoshoot in Barcelona (i wasn't the photographer incidentally). In any case, loyalty to your dealer aside, from Sweden one could fly over to Amsterdam for a cheap weekend stay, and still save money compared to the price here. Seems like a no-brainer to me.
