M6 - Solve the mystery

Hi James

This in fact was a test film, because the camera body had recently been returned from Solms where it had been sent for exactly the type of problem I am experiencing here, although CS said they could find no fault. Which is why I was so careful to ensure I didn't put fingers in front of lenses. The problem is not something new which has just started to happen.

Hence me posting this thread to see if I can get the considered opinions of those I hope are prepared to offer their advice and support.

As I previously said Leica CS have been very helpful and have offered to have it back again in the new year for further investigation so what I'm doing is trying at this end to get as much information and suggestions from wherever and whoever I can.

Regards

Mike

What I'm saying is do some more 'controlled' tests to at least eliminate a light leak or flare, and by simply forcing bright light into the viewfinder on a blank frame you can at least investigate that possibility.

If it's just flare then sending your camera back is just wasting everybodies time.

I did in fact put another 24exp film through yesterday and should pick up the results of that tomorrow but that was done using my 90mm Tele-Elmarit. The weather and light conditions were very similar here to what they were on Tuesday in Bath so lets see those prints come out like ?

The results from the 24 exposure film using the 90mm Tele-Elmarit lens shows no signs of the problems experienced with the Summicron. :)

Here is an example of an M6 light leak mystery. Light came in from top right (when looking at back of camera) through a tiny hole, from a missing plastic protection.

Hi there

That's interesting but was it there on every negative ?? My problem its intermittent on the film using the 50mm Summicron there were 4 images of a total of 25 and of that 4 the worst one was the one I've uploaded.

Best wishes

Mike

no, only seen this effect rarely (ca. 10 %). As you can see from the negative, light leak exposed film beyond image area. Light could only enter from certain angles. Never tested it systematically, but sent it in to leica, who found the leak.

As has already been said the pink area is the top left of the negative, not even on the same side as the hand that presses the shutter. So I go with the theory that it is your left hand, the one focsuing the lens or operating the aperture. A finger is partially getting in the way. If only you had obscured the image even more the solution would be easier to spot.

Not sure I understand - if an object is in the bottom right in front of the lens then it will appear in that position in the picture - like the guitar case. Irrespective of where it appears on the negative in the camera.

  • 1 month later...

Following on from the continuing saga of my mystery M6 problem, Leica CS at Solms asked me to return it once again to them but this time to send the 50mm Summicron along with it. So on the 27th Dec, off it went via UPS,and duly arrived in Solms on the 30th. On the 5th January I received confirmation which said that the body was NFF but the lens needed some attention because although on initial examination it looked alright the problem could be put down to flare (which had been suggested by some members commenting in this thread) and it was booked in for repair that day. At the time I was advised that something called a reflex tube needed replacing and they would re apply the black paint inside the lens and carry out a CLA. On the 19th January it was dispatched back to me.

Since I've had it back its had a couple of films through it and I'm pleased to say that now all seems well with no re-occurrence of the original problem.

Finally, I'd like to say a big thank you to Andrea Frankl and the staff at Leica CS in Solms and Linda Silverton at Mayfair, for the help I've been given in trying to resolve the problem and also to the members of this forum for their suggestions.

OK it’s taken a while to get things sorted but we seem to have got there in the end.

Best wishes :)
