Gibbo Posted December 8, 2011 Share #1 Posted December 8, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) ... Leica Meter MC. If I set both it and my Nikon D60 to 100ASA should I get the same reading or am I missing something blindingly obvious?

giordano Posted December 8, 2011 Share #2 Posted December 8, 2011 If you set them both to ISO 100 and aim them both at the same large evenly illuminated surface (the MC's "field of view" is very roughly that of a 28mm lens), they should give you the same reading to within a stop or so, if both are in working order. If the MC still has its original selenium photocell, there's a good change it has lost some of its oomph over the 45 or 50 years since it was manufactured. Corroded contacts, sticky bearings and other ravages of time could also upset the reading.
sandro Posted December 8, 2011 Share #3 Posted December 8, 2011 If you can, try to match the MC meter with one or two other meters, like another modern handheld meter and perhaps a built-in meter like in an M6. I have a few MC meters, one of which works rather nicely, but the others died along the way. I have used the MC meter with a M# and the results were nice. Gibbo Posted December 8, 2011 Author Share #4 Posted December 8, 2011 Thanks guys. So far all the films I have put throught the M2 have been somewhat underexposed. I have been following the readings on the MC. I don't have another hand held meter and the thought occured to me to use the D60 as a reference. Underexposure can easily happen if you're used to using modern TTL metering and don't adjust your technique for the old, wide-angle selenium meters. In particular, it's easy to include a lot of sky or a bright light source in the area you're metering. You can download a PDF of the MC manual from Leica Meter MC exposure meter, instruction manual, light meter user manual, free PDF manual, camera manual. Gibbo Posted December 9, 2011 Author Share #6 Posted December 9, 2011 Whilst visiting the London Camera Exchange on Baldwin Street, Bristol today, I had a chat about this subject with the guys. Tom kindly offered to calibrate my MC which he then proceeded to do and used an Olympus something or other DSLR as a check. By the time he had finished, the MC and the Olympus were giving the same readings so I am now looking forward to putting a film through the M2 to see the improvement. I also bought a secondhand flight case from them as a new home for my VisoflexII, bellows and lenses. A vast improvement on the cardboard box that my Father had kept them in . At £10 I couldn't really refuse!!

Very helpful. I now know what the booster cell does, it had both me and the guys at the London Camera Exchange scratching our heads. The only thing I don't seem to have now is the incident light cover.
