colorflow Posted February 21, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted February 21, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) All the buttons on the back of my M8 were not responsive for several hours tonight. The camera could still take photos and the auto instant review was working although each review was for a shorten duration. So the LCD was not boken. However, none of the buttons was working so cannot display or use any of the LCD functions. Battery was full and changing to another full battery did not help. Â This problem started with the display turning off after 1 sec or less in response to any button, until finally there was no response. I shut the camera off and after 3 hours or so is now noraml again. Â Anyone had a similar problem? Â Alan
robertwright Posted February 21, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted February 21, 2007 this was similar to what happened to mine, except that mine never came back, and also if I turned the camera off it would not respond at all until removing the bottom plate and taking the battery out and replacing it a few times. Â When I returned it (it happened in less than 24hours of me having it) Leica said that they wanted to fix the on/off switch but I insisted on a replacement and one is on the way soon. Â I think this is probably a firmware thing where when the battery gets low and the calibration is off it runs out of juice and the brain gets scrambled instead of shutting down. All the functions of the camera work individually, but in concert they do not. Like yours, mine would fire and you would see a brief preview, but none of the menus were accessible and if you turned the camera off it was all gone for good. But the dngs were there on the card, etc,. Â Or maybe they are right and it is the switch, but I think the on/off switch is a soft switch, in other words, turning it off while the camera is writing it does not go off immediately, so there is software between the switch and its ultimate function. My hopes are 1.1 addresses whatever this bug is, because I believe all the current crop of cameras probably have this waiting to happen, and it is just a random thing. jaapv Posted February 21, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted February 21, 2007 This sounds like a variation on the battery level calibration problem.
Guest guy_mancuso Posted February 21, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted February 21, 2007 Yes do the rest on this one. Turn camera on and set the menu item to disable for power off. Just leave it on and let it die than recharge. This resets the camera battery level indicator and also fully charges the battery , this is a firmware bug that Solms is fixing and this was there suggestion . I did this to all my batteries and both bodies and it has not come back for at least a month

colorflow Posted February 23, 2007 Author Share #7  Posted February 23, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) If your back up than do it now  Well, I did that before with both my batteries, but went through the drill again. Tonight the same thing happened after 10 or so shots!!! LCD display started shutting itself off after 1 or 2 seconds, and then nothing - all buttons no longer function. Helped me decide sending it back to Solms for the update and repair. It's beginning to look like it's hardware and heat related. Not confidence inspiring.  Alan
Guest guy_mancuso Posted February 23, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted February 23, 2007 Damn , can you still return it . Who did you buy it from and I would call first thing in the morning.
colorflow Posted February 23, 2007 Author Share #9 Â Posted February 23, 2007 Damn , can you still return it . Who did you buy it from and I would call first thing in the morning. Â It's an early gen 1 bought in mid-Nov from Photo Village. Doubt if I can return it. Â alan
colorflow Posted February 23, 2007 Author Share #10 Â Posted February 23, 2007 Well, the problem continues. This time it is not recovering. However, it alternates between the buttons/LCD inoperable, or stuck in one display while the shutter and power switch are inoperable. Â Alan
robertwright Posted February 24, 2007 Share #11 Â Posted February 24, 2007 when mine died Leica wanted to repair it (it died in 24 hours, I insisted on an exchange) and they told my dealer that they thought it was the switch that was causing the trouble. i have a feeling your camera is similar, there is something funky with the switch that they know about but have not addressed. Â I know how frustrating it is, but I think you wil have to send it in for repair. the only good thing is if there is a problem with the switch you will be one of the first to get whatever fix they are implementing, and that and the new firmware that is hopefully coming soon should take care of the majority of the problems. Â good luck. Â rob

Guest guy_mancuso Posted February 24, 2007 Share #13 Â Posted February 24, 2007 I am in the process of trying to find out what exactly was the fix with my camera back in December. Mine was one of the first to have this issue. I do have the camera back from Solms and it works perfectly but i don't know what they actually fixed and if we can find that out , than maybe there is a answer there somewhere. I will report any info I can on this . But i did bring this issue up again to Leica today that this has not gone away yet. This could be a firmware fix that can be in 1.1 but do not know that for fact. So i don't want to speculate.
robertwright Posted February 24, 2007 Share #14  Posted February 24, 2007 Rob, did they exchange yours or fix it? Was it a gen 1?I just sent mine to Solms.  Alan  the one that died was a gen 2 (or is that 3 now) firmware version 1.09 straight from factory. It was not an original that had been upgraded.  They exchanged it as soon as they had stock to swap it out. Remember it died after exactly 24hrs, about 150 frames total. robertwright Posted February 24, 2007 Share #15 Â Posted February 24, 2007 btw the camera I have now is only exactly 2915 units difference in serial number ahead...this was the diff in a week of stock shipped to my dealer. I wonder if it means they manufacture test and ship about 3000 units per week. I do notice that for the first time in a long time b and h had stock for about a 24 hour period this week, so they must be close to meeting demand and filling all the back orders. that just leaves the repairs...
