Is is the m4-p you keep for sentimental reasons or the lens that is attached to it?

GAS comes and goes. I have a 90 summarit, 50 lux, 35 cron, and 21zm. I keep thinking about a 28 or 75 -- but a glass of Oban straight up settles me back to finding my focus on taking better photos rather than sublimating that harder task by taking up the easier one of buying another piece of equipment.

Where the gas attack does keep coming back is to add an old film leica just so i can see what these lenses can do with film. i come from a canon f1 world with wonderful lenses and lots of film memories. it is the reason why i was asking about the m4p. after all, when the revolution comes electricity and batteries are likely to be in short supply. perhaps one should stock up now on enough film to be able to record the coming apocalypse (smiley face of some sort should be inserted here but in deference to you i won't)

Lars, I think it is time to broaden your horizons, since getting my M8 and a few lenses I've found that the craving for more and more Leica stuff has diminished, gone is the thought that the 8 was just a stage towards a 9 etc.

I have a new kind of GAS - virtual GAS. I purposely don't know what I may "need" to purchase, I click on eBay cameras that brings up the entire camera/photography listing (thousands of items), then on - ending soonest and then on - used, I then check everything that is coming up for today.

Everything from accessories to clapped out movie cameras appear randomly in front of my eyes. Suddenly you notice a Linhof tripod head and think that could come in handy! then maybe a camera bag on wheels, an Xpan, a Fuji GW680 111, all at stupidly low prices, occasionally something really crazy comes up like an unused Zenit Olympic Fotokomplekt kit that someone has no idea that the Helios 40 is worth a bit etc etc, I think to myself I could buy that for $100 and sell it for $900 at least.

And that will sort of pay for...................the next good Xpan that goes past or Summicron....... but best of all mostly I don't buy anything arguing, what would I want that for my M8 kit is better than that anyway.

That camera – the last of the completely non-electical M cameras – is a lovely one, but with it I have lenses that carry the same 1913–1983 jubilee engraving as the camera, and it all belongs together. Admittedly, the collector value is not great but I do not feel like splitting the kit up.

If GDII (Great Depresson II) gets that bad, we will probably be strapped for development chemicals, photo paper and even clean water too. The last time I used that camera was once when I wanted the full field of view of my 18mm lens, but then came the M9 and that was the End of Film. I have gone completely digital. I don't even print.

...an Xpan ...all at stupidly low prices...

Clive - next time you see one of those - give me a heads-up, eh. I'm stunned at how expensive good Xpans still are. Last year I arrived late at an auction and missed buying a never-unboxed Xpan and 40mm for <€2k. Still kicking myself.

Otherwise I feel pretty sated by equipment. If anything I have too much stuff - especially lenses, and right now feel no need to buy new stuff. There are always exceptions naturally - it would be nice to have a spare A12 back for the Hasselblad, and I'd like to replace my partner's Nikon D90 with a smaller half-compact that she might actually use. But I've given up scouring the b@y or clicking on the classifieds. Quite a liberating feeling.

I got mine for $AU1200, not boxed and unused but in perfect condition, just one of those silly auctions, bad timing, 9:15 in the morning and a really horrible looking one went the day before for $AU850 I think people were saying to themselves that was more the price.

The problem with Aus eBay is that most stuff is Australia only and the exchange rate isn't too helpful to you guys at the moment.

just saw this one ending today - but Aus only posting - my guess is that it'll sell for $1450

After many years as a working professional and M3/ Mandler enthusiast, I too was running low on G.A.S. The pure enjoyment of the process was eluding me. The "cure" was a renewed fidelity to my first love (in my case the III). I re-discovered an enthusiasm, not merely as a dedicated Barnackian, but as a zelot for those gems of genius created by Prof. Berek. While one can certainly get overwhelmed by the endless (financial) challenge of acquiring ever newer, faster, and more modern kit, there is a serene comfort in the gathering of items black & nickel. The source is finite and shrinking.

If the rumors of GDII are true, keep your RASUK handy. Stock up on bulk film and chemicals. Spend those long winter nights reading Vith.
