rondeb Posted February 20, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted February 20, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just a test here. Here's a shot and a crop of a shot using RAW default settings, converting to bw via Alien Skin Delta 100(w/grain) and a pinch of unsharp mask on the eyes. This reminds me very much of my film days. stunsworth Posted February 20, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted February 20, 2007 Hi Ron, I've been using the Alien Skin plug-in for a few months and love it for b&w. I find some of the colour settings a little strange, though I like the Astia setting and Kodachrome 25 in particular. Â I tend to not use the Delta 100 too much as it can overbrighten the highlights IMHO - on my shots at least, yours looks ok. I love the Tri-X simulation, the grain looks gorgeaous IMHO. Â The only thing I wish for is a simpler way of adding the effect of a b&w filter. I'd like to see something like a drop down box with the usual options - yellow, green red etc. together with the ability to control the strength of the filter. Â The price is a bit steep too. cbretteville Posted February 20, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted February 20, 2007 Ron/Steve, Which one of Alien Skin's plugins are you using, "Exposure"? - Carl
stunsworth Posted February 20, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted February 20, 2007 Carl, yes it's exposure. 30 day trial available on their web site.
rondeb Posted February 20, 2007 Author Share #6 Â Posted February 20, 2007 Yes, Alien Skin Exposure. I was hesitant buying it at first because of the high price, BUT, I now find myself using it quite a bit. The filters are a nice departure from most of the highly processed looking actions out there nowadays. Best, Ron

gesper Posted February 20, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted February 20, 2007 I'm not at home so can't check it, but Exposure includes the ability to adjust reds, greens, and blues, contrast, curves, grain and just about everything else. I generally start with one of the profiles and then adjust accordingly.

stunsworth Posted February 20, 2007 Share #10 Â Posted February 20, 2007 Alexander, are you using a Mac? If so you'll have to either run CS3 in Rosetta mode, or wait for the native Intel compatible plug-in.

Alex, I ordered the Mac (download) version last week. The download manager found both CS2 and CS3 and asked me where I wanted to put it. You have to do each separately, but it works fine in CS2 and CS3. You might want to call tech support.
stunsworth Posted February 20, 2007 Share #12 Â Posted February 20, 2007 Incidentally, if you order the plug-in on CD, you get a CD with both the Mac and PC versions on it, plus a printed manual.

Yes im on a mac, (of course) and i can install it and all, but it just don't work, can't find the plugin in CS3 at all...? It's probably the beta CS3, but it's strange someone can get it to work and some don't...?
Iron Flatline Posted February 20, 2007 Share #14 Â Posted February 20, 2007 Phew, good to hear I'm not the only one using the Alien Skin software. I thought I was just being lazy for not finding my own B&W conversions though I have to admit I really like the ease of Alienskin. It really is a little too expensive though. It's probably the beta CS3, but it's strange someone can get it to work and some don't...? Alexander, Are you on a Intel based Mac? I went to the Alien Skin website and there is a Forum for Exposure. There was a CS3 folder and it looks like, from the administrators mouth, that the "Intel based Macs" won't be supported until public release of CS3. My Mac is a dual processor G5 Power PC. stunsworth Posted February 20, 2007 Share #16 Â Posted February 20, 2007 William is correct. I assumed we were all using Intel Macs. Sorry about that.

It's probably the beta CS3, but it's strange someone can get it to work and some don't...? You are using a Mac with Intel processor, right? The Alien Skin Plug-Ins are – as of right now – Power-PC only, so to get them to work with the Photoshop CS3 beta, you'll need to have PS CS3 start up in Power-PC emulation mode. To do this, open the info window of the PS CS3 executable by either clicking on the PS CS3 program file in the Finder and pressing Cmnd-I or right-clicking on CS3 and selecting "Get info". Use this option:   Quit and restart PS CS3, the Exposure Plug-In should be available now. You will loose all speed advantages of the Intel processor (and then some) though due to emulation. And Exposure needs to be installed in the correct (CS3) directory.
