It really is a Byzantine RoboCamera. I'll bet it takes longer to _master_ the menus that it does to learn the Zone System, and as unnecessary.

I have a D700. I set the menus the first day I bought it, and have never touched them since.

 

I would imagine that the same would happen were I to buy one of these. Which I won't.

 

As with lots of these things, you don't need to use the functions if you don't want to.

my first R lens, a 35/70, is on its way to barcelona to get 'adapted'. its first home will be an F4, later a D-something. the 800 is now a top 3 candidate.

Interesting. I have been getting much more into MF photography at present. Digital backs are completely out of the question unless I have a lottery win. But I do wonder what the rumoured 36mp output of this monster will be like. On a pixel level basis probably poorer than a Hass CV-39 back but on a real-world basis probably similar. Certainly makes yer think.

I understand, Andy. I was given two new late-model Nikon D* cameras in partial trade for some art-work I did for a Swiss company. I used each and gave them away within a couple weeks. Can't stand all that stuff, but that's me.

 

Nonetheless, one has to carry the monster. I suppose it is large in order to support the hardware, computer parts and batteries. It still speaks to Byzantine to me. It offends my sense of design in many ways. I do not know what the inside of the camera is composed of, but the electronics should be very small. Perhaps they are unique and therefore not economically sized. Perhaps the camera is voluminous (but not heavy) in order to spread-out the controls on the back to be more ergonomic (laughs).

 

Leica's M9 menu structure and options make a very elegant design, IMHO.

 

A thought - if a camera maker could come up with a general CPU it could be used in several camera models, but programmed from a separate module, off-camera, perhaps one's personal computer and thereby reducing the bulk of the camera itself. By the economy of scale, the chip could be less expensive and smaller.

You don't need the battery pack on the bottom, btw. I haven't got one on my D700 and I can get a weeks worth of shooting out of one charge so have never seen the need for the battery pack.

 

It's not an M9, obviously, but it caters for a different market, including orphaned R users, like myself.

It does. I'd buy a Hasselblad back too, but given that I have several R lenses, all Leitaxed, this looks very interesting indeed. I haven't seen a price yet, but you can bet it will be less than an M9.

D800 about half the price of M9 - 300,000 Yen which is roughly £2.45K.

 

D800 will trade off for high megapixel count for unchanged high ISO performance from D700 except it will offer 100 ISO as base which is good.

 

Word is out D800 will be offered without AA filter as an option. I am hoping Nikon also comes with either optional split prism focusing screen or other means of improved manual focusing improving on D700's green dot, those 36MP will be very demanding on accurate focusing.

I've seen figures of £2.5K being talked about which I suspect will be discounted a little.

 

I'll be watching the samples from this camera very carefully.

With rumors flying hot and heavy about the new Nikon 36mp body, makes me wonder about

the viability of the S2. Nikon body with R lens may be a hard to beat combination.

Leica replacement mounts to mount on Nikon sold by Fotodiox and Leitax.

 

I am using Fotodiox ones on my 35 and 28 pc lenses.

Also, don't forget old Leitz glass from 65 mm to 800 mm (I am using 65, 90, 135, 200, 280, 400, and 560 mm M-lens heads and V-Telyts already on my Nikon D3 and D300). A 36 MP Nikon would be very welcome if it stays in the tradition of the D3, D3S, and D3X.

As good, as the R glass might be, I doubt, one can see much benefit in resolving them with 36MP, when tests already find niggles with Nikon's best, high res purpose built primes (see D3x) are considered borderline!

 

The S2 simply stays viable, as it is, what it is: a digital medium format system with lenses, specifically designed and built, to match that performance.

 

There is no free lunch, as they say.

I think these threads belong right here in the Digital Forum.

Most discussions are anyway focused on how Leica/Leitz lenses work with these cameras.

 

Why should this be any different from Sony or Ricoh discussions that set a precedent?

Just my opinion and a polite request, Karl-Heinz. I don't think that Sony or Ricoh or Fuji discussions belong in any forum designated for Leica equipment either. Sometimes there is a peripheral connection to Leica. Often there is none at all. On the other hand Barnack's Bar is open to any subject, hence my suggestion. I'm no mod though and if Andreas is willing to host increasing numbers of non-Leica topics then so it shall be. I just suggested moving the discussions though, not stopping them. It makes it easier to follow the Leica threads in each specific forum

ps Just looked for an example, more than 2000 posts in a merged Fuji X100 thread and you can't use a Leica anything on that and so I guess the horse has long bolted !

Lots and lots of old R users, including Mods, use Nikon bodies with their R glass. This is the right place for this discussion, as it is entirely relevant.

 

Discussion of this year's "greatest ever" point and shoot which does not have any connection to Leica or allow the use of their lenses, do not belong here at all, IMHO.
