mobile photo hardrive vs cards

What is your experience with mobile photo hardrive ?

Do products like GIGAone by Jobo or others offer a real advantage against cards ?

What would you recommend ? size and brand

Did you have any problem with this kind of device ?

When I travel for a shoot I take a laptop and I have considered getting a Gigaview or Archos BUT

1) Not sure if they read M8 DNG files

2) Because I hate the thought of losing a few days' shots, I take a tiny portable harddrive with me and back all photos up to it from my laptop. One goes in cabin baggage, one in the hold - so most disaster should be averted. You can't do that with a gigaview!

1) No GVPE doesn't recognize M8 DNG, just the embedded thumbnail

2) Yes it can: GVPE has two USB ports, one of which can backup to USB hard drive. It doesn't recognize my Mac-formatted iPod though.

As it's basically a very small Linux computer, the source code for it's firmware is freely available, and I suppose a person is free to add additional filesystem and raw photo support, within the system's memory limits.

I bought the 40 gigabyte model because it was substantially cheaper, and differs only in the hard drive capacity. I will upgrade it to a 120G hard drive ($80 after rebate at Circuit City) which saves me something like $300+. Admittedly, even 40G is kind of a lot: When I carried film, I didn't normally carry that kind of capacity.
