Do you want to get rid of it then? What is it? An S2? The only Leica I would contemplate owning, but the price...

zeleny Posted November 25, 2011 Author Share #44 Posted November 25, 2011 If you haven't already handled one, or an Epic (I see you're in LA, please ignore if you have ), you'll find Scarlet to be a little bulkier than your S2 by the time you've kitted it out. It will also have a few limitations if used as a stills camera only in the traditional sense, eg no strobes/flash currently and motion centric ergonomics. It's EVF of course, and you can't connect both the EVF and touch screen display simultaneously at the moment (not until the pro i/o module or some other solution is available) although you can connect a SmallHD display or similar via HDMI or HD-SDI. Modularity is good but it does mean that both EVF and display connect via cables. I've been following RED and their DSMC concept closely, perhaps you have too, and there's no doubt that Epic is hugely capable and Scarlet will be close behind. However if it's the S side of the DSMC mix that is of primary interest (and it would be for me) then there are compromises to be made compared to current stills cameras. In other words, I really would have to want the motion capability in order to justify owning either at the moment. I am working out these concerns while waiting for my Scarlet X. I need the motion capability, but my primary interest is in still photography. As you imply, modularity has its drawbacks. In fact, I chose the S2 over its competitors because of its unit construction. The Red Epic/Scarlet platform offers a versatile hedge against obsolescence in a more cumbersome package. I expect the S2 to deliver more results for me in the long run, and hope that Red comes out with an S2 lens mount in not too far removed future, as they are about to do for M lenses. Yes, the M-mount is a very welcome surprise from RED. An S-mount would also be very interesting, but more difficult and time consuming for RED to implement so less likely I suspect. Unless of course they went for a less complicated, non electronic, 'dumb' mount. An earlier thread on the M mount and some motion chat here http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/customer-forum/208157-dsmc-m-mount.html#post1877908
Pesto Posted December 5, 2011 Share #46 Posted December 5, 2011 I'd also suggest that if you have a first generation OLED top screen, to get it replaced with the new one while it is visiting Solms. The new style screen has a bluish tint to it and is clearly visible in daylight. Hope this helps. David David, Can you tell us when the OLED top screen upgrade appeared with respect to S/N? Thank you.
jlehrer Posted December 5, 2011 Share #47 Posted December 5, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Pesto, the serial number of the camera is not connected to the OLED upgrade, as Leica has fixed many of their in-house cameras as well as customer cameras. I have seen bodies with 3800xxx serial numbers come from Leica with new OLED screens, along with the later 3900xx serials. The best way is to visually check the screen. I might suggest checking this thread for a reference image. Josh

lars_bergquist Posted January 31, 2012 Share #53 Posted January 31, 2012 Oh come on. When my M9 cracked its cover glass this was just what it looked like. I think the reason for this whole thread going on for so long, and for some people still not accepting reality, is the feeling that nothing that expensive should do anything as vulgar as cracking its f...ing cover glass.
