What the h*ll is going on here?

I've seen a link to this on another forum.

I asked there for details of the "...number of moves promoting the requirement of 'ID' cards to allow photographers to operate in a public place." and no one was able to provide me to any kind of link whatsoever.

File under EU bent banana scare stories - unless someone can show me otherwise.

Perhaps a topic more for the forum?

Great idea Andy. We could cut and paste in send it to all sorts of people. Do one to Leica for your V1.03, one ot Kodak for more Chrome64, I need better cakes at the corner store and I cant petition to my local member because he has landed in hot water...Endless possibilities and look...it already comes with a list of names:p .

I couldn't care less about a stupid petition. The Government have the same opinion - look at the 1.2m+ signatures on the road pricing one, that will be ignored.

It's the suggestion that photography in a public place will become illegal without an ID card that worries the bejeazus out of me.

Andy, the point is that there is no evidence that anyone is proposing the banning of photography in public places - show me the evidence and I'll change my mind.

It seems like something that's be posted by someone to elicit a lot of votes, and the week after next the Daily Mail will be able to have a headline that reads something to the effect of 'Thousands vote against government plans to ban photography'.

Apparently it is now possible to register any sort of "poll" on the uk.gov website.

Normal order will be resumed as soon a possible......

This is a desperately silly idea and will...... (trust me I (((really))), work for them)...... not last for long.

So; looking forward to the forthcoming English croquoet championship season...............

Look dierctly at my "wand", you will feel no pain, ffzzzzzzzzzzzz

I've seen this link on Photo Net, there has been a thread about perverts in London on that forum lately.

The police in London seems to be making life hard for photographers after complaint about certain types taking pictures of young children.

This will be most likely what the turmoil is all about. A petition without a solid manifest is imho nothing more than a panic reaction.

Some stuff here.

I'm certainly not aware of any legislation (apart from Ken Livingstone's abortive attempt to place "photo-paranoia-inducing" signs in London parks.

However, the attitude of the so-called authorities, coupled with the brain-dead rantings of the tabloid press (and their acolytes in the broadcast media) seems to have brought about a near hysterical reaction amongst some sections of the public - see what happened when the "News of the World" ran a campaign against paedophiles, and a few of it's more neanderthal readers decided that anything with the prefix "paed" was a bad thing, leading to a mob forcing a paediatrician from his home, for what this can lead to.

If the word photographer were replaced by homosexual, ethnic minority, or some such, things would be different.

Ahh right. I thought it was about the idea of the online pole Andy. Anyway, half the time I walk around with a camera I have my ID on me anyway, because I cop a fine if I am caught driving without my drivers license actually on me. We now have to have fishing licenses, licenses to ride motorbikes, fly planes all sorts of stuff. I guess it is revinue raising thing. Am sure it isnt about competency.

I was taking photographs in London Victoria Station some months back ("street photography"), when I was noticed by a couple of (transport?) police and advised that if I wanted to do this I would have to obtain permission from whoever owns/runs the station. I was told that this was to ensure that I was not a terrorist - ie should, heaven forbid, there be an attack on the station and a perpetrator was found to have been taking photos unchallenged, there might an outcry.

Recent restrictions such as this may be connected to whatever may have given rise to this particular petition.

This link

UK Photographers Rights

has a couple of pages on photographers' rights in the UK (albeit current only as at August 2004) and a comments/queries forum. I tried to ask about this petition but couldn't manage to post the query - perhaps someone might have more success.

The petition appears to be a solo effort by someone called "Simon Taylor":

Petition Information

In short there is no photo-legislation in the offing. None is drafted, none is planned. I guess Taylor wanted to get famous really fast. Looks like it worked.

On a completely unrelated topic, what are you left when you remove "terta" from "watertanker"?...

:?)

Wrt the petitions website, there has been some suggestion of mischief-making by "opposition supporters", it is apparently very easy to start a petition on any subject, imaginary or real, and that is just what is happening. The system will become clogged, and thereby discredited. I have to say that it was a very, very silly idea in the first place.

Here is a very useful two-page pdf which covers rights of photographers in the UK:

UK Photographers Rights

As far as I am aware I am not related to "Simon Taylor".

I have it on good authority (like the authoress) that she is already working on an updated version of The Photographers Rights as it is based on 2004 law therefore it is already out of date with respect to the so called "terroism act".

Anyway as a keen street photographer, I keep a copy in my camera bag to wave at any PC Plod that may feel inclined to feel my collar whilst photographing! The alternative is to wear a complete veil and dress, when I would probably be able to do anything....on second thoughts, why the hell should I?
