mholtsberg Posted October 15, 2011 Share #1 Posted October 15, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I hope this has not been asked too many times. Being fairly new to the M8 I am wondering???? How many of you use the IR filter all the time, how many not at all? Is it really necessary for "everyday" shooting? Will my lens rot and fall off if I do not use it?? I have not tried shooting without it yet, but am just curious... Thanks for any advice.

Jeff S Posted October 15, 2011 Share #3 Posted October 15, 2011 I haven't removed mine since new several years ago. It improves colors, and not just blacks rendered magenta by some synthetic fabrics. Some don't use it for b/w photography, but since I shoot both color and b/w, it's totally impractical to switch around. Some may also remove it at night when specular highlights might intrude; I haven't bothered. (And, yes, this has been addressed here many times...just use the search box at the top right to bring up other threads. Always a good idea for most any subject...not much new under the (filtered or unfiltered) sun.) Jeff

Dougg Posted October 17, 2011 Share #5 Posted October 17, 2011 Yes, at first I tried to avoid the UV/IR filters on the M8, but after an overseas vacation trip, and examining the results, I saw that it was necessary. So that lead to filter purchases, and getting my lenses coded. Once that's settled, it's smooth sailing!
jdlaing Posted October 18, 2011 Share #6 Posted October 18, 2011 On in good light. Off at night without flash or in real low light.
Dougg Posted October 19, 2011 Share #7 Posted October 19, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) If the low light comes from incandescent bulbs, there will be considerable IR contamination of the scene, so the UV IR filter is well advised for that!
