I would have bought some 160H and 400H, but they only had the odd 120 roll. No Portra at all. Last time I was in there, they had two glass fronted fridges, with a decent range. Now, they are down to half a fridge, with virtually no 35mm C41* at all. I did manage to buy some Portra 160 and 400 from the place on the Cariocca Business Park that looks like a jumble sale (very friendly guys there), so all is not lost, but with Mathers not selling Kodak colour films any more and Calumet having clearly lost interest, things are starting to get tougher out there. Mail order is going to become the only way soon. * I know that I have said before that I am abandoning C41, but it is convenient... Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

earleygallery Posted October 7, 2011 Share #6 Posted October 7, 2011 I think the best thing to do is start avoiding the places that can't be bothered to stock a decent range of film and give the business to someone that does. Give the slackers reason to ditch it altogether and encourage the resellers who can be bothered! It's funny, one of the best places near me to buy film - small but varied stock of 35mm and 120 - is the small Jessops store on Purley Way. Their larger town centre store didn't have any last time I looked. Silverprint stock just about everything, including two types of 127 film for the baby Rollei. Usually its an act of desperation but they've always come through in times of need- and sometimes they've a surprising variety too, even if its jumbled and in a corner (even managed to pick up 120 in Prestatyn!) The colours are all over the place - muddy yet way too contrasty. Quite an achievement! Lots of people like it - which is fine, but IMHO Portra or Reala are far, far better medium speed colour print films. I also found it a nightmare to scan as I like it - I think I was fighting against the mud and the contrast. How Kodak could have claimed that it was an excellent alternative to Kodachrome is beyond me. This is just my opinion, of course. If you like it, that's great. But if Ektar was the last colour print film, I would really move on and never use C41 again. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
