hi every one!

I have a few days to make a dificult decision!!!

I already search here is forum, internet reviews and a litle confused with so many information and opinions...

I want a compact camera with fotograph quality, zoom, and excellent video quality!

So i found 2 cameras with this qualities...LEICA D-LUX5 or (pana lx5) and LEICA V-LUX30 or (pana tz20)...

For one side the d-lux5 have a great image...but poor zoom (3,8x) and video (hd 720), and the v-lux30 have´s a great zoom (16x) and video (hd 1080)...

I can get awnsome pictures and videos with 16x zoom or i loose quality with the zoom 16x???

And the D-lux5 zoom and videos quality is good enough?

which one is better in low light?because i want to take some pictures and do some videos at concerts and football games...??

so, what is your´s opinion about that?

apreciate your attention!

Nothing in your original post seems to imply a sense of urgency. But I suppose 30 min is a very long time to wait for an answer...

To be honest, I think the D LUX 5 is your best option here. Image quality wise, it's really no contest. In terms of zoom / video quality... I don't think there's a real difference between 1080p and 720p (sorry I stand corrected, I think the videos are recorded interlaced. 720P vs 1080I is really not a serious difference. I would actually prefer the smaller, but progressive option instead. So it REALLY doesn't make a difference there.) In terms of the zoom, that's all dependent on your shooting style, personally, most of my images are made with prime lenses between 24mm - 90mm, so that's about the same range as the D LUX 5.

My 2 cents..

Unless you want to take a lot of photos of wild animals or birds, I would go along with the majority opinion of the D-Lux 5. The only missing item and why I would not buy this as a point and shoot, is the lack of an electronic viewfinder. I hate holding cameras at arms length and you can't see an LCD in bright sunlight. I know you can mount a fixed optical VF on the D-Lux but with a zoom lens, that's not perfect.

When I wanted to buy a small back up pocket camera a couple of years ago, for those occasions that an M is too big, too vulnerable or too valuable, I decided on a Ricoh GX100 and then updated to the much better GX200. It takes DNG RAW, has a 24-75mm equivalent lens and a perfectly usable if not great, demountable electronic view finder. The only downside is high noise at higher ISO's, where the D-Lux would be much better. I just would not buy an expensive P&S without either a optical zoom finder like the Canon G12 or EVF like the Ricoh's or Olympus EPL-2/3 with VF-2. I think Leica/Panasonic missed a trick when they did not offer an optional EVF on the D-Lux 5 and V-Lux 30. I would have upgraded to a D-Lux 5 if they had.

Wilson, the D-Lux 5 does have an EVF...

Leica D-LUX 5 EVF-1 Viewfinder: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

It's identical to the Panasonic equivalent.

Thanks for that Steve. I last looked at the D-Lux 5 soon after it came out, when maybe the EVF was not yet available. I may well now consider upgrading my GX200 to a D-Lux 5 or -ish but it is not cheap at over £900 for camera, VF and case. If you go Panasonic, the total cost is less than £500, with even the EVF half the price of what I would guess, apart from the logo and the 2 year warranty, is identical. A touch hard to swallow that price differential. I know the Leica has different firmware and Panasonic's literature does not make clear if it takes in RAW just saying file format: JPEG (DCF/Exif 2.3). I assume it does since Capture One offers an LX5 profile.

I just looked at the prices of the Pana LX5 in the US. If I bought on Amazon US with the LVF-1 viewfinder and got my daughter to bring it with her when she comes across at Xmas, the price would be an amazing £330, against £860 for a D-Lux5 and viewfinder on Amazon UK. The other camera I might look at is the new Fuji X10 at £380 in the US but maybe it is a little on the large side. I always want to be able to fit a back up camera comfortably into a shirt pocket.

I have them both.

Pretty different cameras.

But, if I had to chose, in this kind of area I would go for the D-LUX 5, knowing that probably next year there will be a D-LUX 6!

The V-LUX 30 is rather a "pocket" camera, very useful, but quality of D-LUX 5 is overall very good......

As long as I bought the Illume RED BULL ltd edition, would you like to buy my "plain" D-LUX 5 (complete with accessories and box?)

;-)

You are comparing a cheaper camera in a lower cost market, Vat free, with a more expensive camera, in the higher cost market, with 20% added. Hardly affair comparison by any stretch of the imagination :)

Compare apples with apples.

I really like the D-Lux 5 but I don't think it's the best choice for you. The D-Lux 5 has excellent image quality and a very good wideangle lens. Low light quality is reasonable so long as you don't mind a grainy look. BUT: Its lens is not long enough for concerts or football games unless you are very close to the action or content with crowd shots.

I do not know enough about the V-Lux 30's overall image quality and I'm afraid I'm not much help with video either. It will be hard to shoot a long lens in low light without a tripod or monopod. That might be a good investment.

The V-Lux 30 is the winner on specs. I would suggest also checking out the V-Lux 2 or its Panasonic equivalent. I strongly recommend trying out cameras beforehand instead of buying sight unseen -- even if it costs a little more -- rather than risk making an expensive mistake.

EDIT: Here's the link to the Leica V-Lux 2. Check it out, it's impressive, including hi-def video and a super telephoto lens for sports, concerts, or wildlife. The Panasonic version is called an FZ-100. Only downside is it is not so compact, but still smaller than a DSLR.

hi,

thank´s for ypur opinion...

i already see the v lux2...in fact is really good...and haves everything i want, great image quality, amazing zoom and good video quality...but is a little bit big...i´m looking for this functions but in a "pocket" camera...the super compacts are very ease to carriage, to enter in the concerts shows with no problems, and for travelling...

i see at some moments ago the last compact camera of canon, the canon s100, not bad too...

thank´s again

Go for the D-Lux 5. A bright lens with good picture quality, RAW mode and the four aspects to the shape of picture i.e. square format; via the switch on the lens body. It might not have a lot of bells & whistles but its a fine camera.

Cheers, Macjim.
