Panasonic Hype?

Just a short question. I keep reading about the Panasonic cameras being the same as Leicas with no difference whatsoever. Owning a few Leica cameras and some other brands, I wonder. It seems to me the images from my Leicas are always more vibrant and spot on. Is it just me or is'nt there really a difference, even if in the electronics?

Hell yeah they are different and anyone telling you different is an ignorant jackass. From lens mount to sensor, and including both, the difference is as different between a worm and a man.

I have the Panasonic G1 and Leica M9. Oi! The difference in quality is profound! I carry the Panasonic when I feel I'm in danger of being pummeled (like bicycle riding in dangerous areas), but all the rest is pure Leica. Now, if all you do is little pictures for facebook, then buy a disposable and stay away until you are informed by your own eyes.

Doesn't Leica have a rebranded P&S that's a Panasonic? Might be another brand... It's late... :)

Don't let what others say affect you. I have the camaro crowd always up mine since I own a supercharge Mustang that made it in a mag or two. Frankly I couldn't give 2 cents about their camaro's... That's not the car I bought ;)

Well that certainly clears that up!

Still, I wonder about this photo.

A friend of mine drove his Ferrari through West Virginia. At a parking lot someone asked him if it was the new Firebird. He said, "Yes, the new Italian Firebird."

What do you think?

Leica's current film cameras, the M9, S2, and X1 - made by Leica. The others (and several digitals from the past) made by Panasonic.

I had a 4x5 "Leica" Aristophot microscope camera that looked to be made by Linhof. (It was marked "Linhof" on the back and some of it was the same as parts on my Linhof view camera.) Some Leica SLRs were made by Minolta, as were some lenses. Leica CL by Minolta. There probably are other examples, but that is all I can think of offhand.

None of this is a secret.

as dpreview tested...

Leica D-lux5 vs panasonic LX5

Standard JPG the leica delivers more bright & crisp images.

set them to raw the result is 100% the same, so believing them there is a difference between the 2 using the JPG function.

i mean look at the ways of sharpening on photoshop, unsharp mark, sharpen edges, then there's the sharpening by layers..

my self im using NIK software Sharperner to do the sharpening.. also different from all of the above..

for me there's the difference between a leica or panasonic.

take the other thing into account, they deliver the same images.. but with the leica u get Lightroom or Elements depending on the model you buy..

the panasonic give you nothing so the possibilities for post processing are much bigger with leica's again giving you better images.

The correct answer derives from the above post : Leica sells a number of P & S cameras that are, no secretly at all, made by Panasonic and in strict relation with some Panasonic models : at basic level of image taken, i.e. the Raw file, one must expect practically the same file; the Leica versions have a number of details, technical, aesthetical and in terms of addon products delivered, which position them at a higher market level so that, together with the brand name's value, a higher price is justified (up to the customer to decide if the "premium price" is "right").

Conversely, some of Panasonic cameras have lenses that bear the Leica name, but are not built at Leica's optical manufacturing department.

I've had Panasonic and Leica versions of the same camera in the past, LC, LX, D-Lux...

Bottom line - the Leica is a badge-engineered Panasonic. They are made in the same factory. There appear to be some minor firmware tweaks, but if you shoot raw that doesn't matter for the end result.

The big differences come in two areas; handling and extras. I bought a D-Lux 4 instead of the equivalent LX after having LX for the two previous cameras because you can fit a decent handgrip to a form factor which otherwise resembles a bar of soap with a tin of shoe polish on it - same with the D-Lux 5. You cannot do the same with the LX equivalent. Also the overall "package" for the Leica is better - longer warranty, better bundled software.

Actually, I am wrong - there is a third fundamental difference. The ones with the red dots keep their value better in the secondhand market. That's important for some.

Bill

I believe that the OP is referring to the rebranded Panasonic cameras that are sold by Leica, not whether a Panasonic G1 is the same as a Leica M9.

Further, the lenses on the Leica versions of the Panasonic cameras are identical to the Panasonic versions that bear the same lens and are also not made in a Leica factory.

I looked at both D-Lux-5 and the LX5 and came away with the LX5 for one reason=$400 vs. $800. Plus the LVF was then about $140 vs. I guess $300. No brainer.

as for the Leica designed (?) Panasonic 4/3 lenses for my GF1. They perform admirably, even the 14-150. The 25 is magic even though I prefer to use the 20 1.7 on the street and in tight situations. The Panasonic 7-14 is very sharp to me and the 100-300 gives that reach I cannot or will not walk towards for a 135 M9 shot.

Well, the Leica had better hold its value better since when one purchases the D-Lux-5 vs. the LX-5 you have paid for 2 LX-5's when buying one D-Lux-5. For $400 paid for the Panasonic I care very little about my LX-5 holding value. Heck a Leica Universal Polarizing filter costs $100 more than the LX-5 camera just to put into perspective what we are discussing here.

I do agree we want Red Dot items will hold value where they are truly Red Dot made in Solms.
