algrove Posted October 3, 2011 Share #1 Â Posted October 3, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Cannot find a filter made by Leica for the M9 since all info I found only discusses filter for the M8-Uva/IR. I want an non IR filter-i.e., a UVa filter.
Advertisement Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 Hi algrove, Take a look here Which non IR filter for M9 on SEM 18mm f3.8?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
adan Posted October 3, 2011 Share #2  Posted October 3, 2011 Leica makes a 77mm filter adapter for the 18mm. Here's one 77mm Leica UVa (not IR) filter:  FS: leica E77 UVa 77mm UV filter, Canon 135 L, Canon Timer - FM Forums  It does look like they may have been discontinued - or are at least a lot rarer - with the end of the larger lenses for the R system.  There are, of course, lots of high-grade non-Leica-made 77mm UVa filters out there: B+W, Heliopan, etc. (Hint: Leica UV/IR filters were Hoya filters in a Leica ring )  For reasons of size and cost, I did a workaround with a UV/IR filter when I had an 18mm on my M8. Got a 55mm empty filter ring, which mounted backwards on the front of the 18mm (without lens shade) and provided the extra depth to clear the domed front element. Then I screwed the filter (also backwards) onto the exposed threads of the empty ring. (And mounted the lens hood on the filter's "back" 55mm female threads).  That approach might cause vignetting on an M9 (especially if the lens hood is included to the "stack") - but maybe not. Someone would have to experiment with a 55 UVa.
jaapv Posted October 3, 2011 Share #3 Â Posted October 3, 2011 The best, but expensive, solution would be to replace the glass in the UV/IR filter for the lens.
Nuit Posted October 3, 2011 Share #4 Â Posted October 3, 2011 I've been using M 18/3.8 for a while. I have used the Leica adapter ring for 18/3.8 then attached UVa 77mm on. Â By the way, it is necessary to use UV/IR filter with the M9??? Â Ciao
jaapv Posted October 3, 2011 Share #5 Â Posted October 3, 2011 YES! for th M8, no for the M9.
Guest srheker Posted October 3, 2011 Share #6 Â Posted October 3, 2011 By the way, it is necessary to use UV/IR filter with the M9??? Â UV/IR Filters on the M9 are not recommended by Leica. The M8 needs them, on the M9 they may cause trouble.
jaapv Posted October 3, 2011 Share #7 Â Posted October 3, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) That is correct for shorter lenses than 50 on the M9. For 50 and over I will use an UV/IR instead of a plain UV.

But I have read that giving the SEM 18 a try might help with edge/corner sharpness which is important to me. How do find your Leica 18mm? They are hard to find but I am almost ready. Maybe your comments will help push me over the edge. Thanks.

BTW, I've got M 18/3.8 in Asia.  Ciao
