I just came into a bunch of Leitz, I mean a real bunch.

I took the same identical photo with 5 different 50 mm lenses, adapt mounted to my NEX-5,set all of them to f4, ISO 200.

photos are here

A rigid Summicron serial (1965) 2108xxx

An adapted Summitar serial (1950) 7646xx

An adapted Summar (1939) 4246xx

An adapted collapsible Summicron (1954) 1174xxx

An adaped Elmar f3.4 (1952) serial 1046xxx

Imported into Lightroom and Zeroed all the settings, no exposure, contrast, sharpening, lens correction, no nothing. I white balanced the RAW files (everyones at 5550), and then JPGed.

Tell me which is which...

I took the same identical photo

Amazing how different lenses pick up different cloud formations, not otherwise noticeable to the human eye. Plus different shadows and camera direction/position.

All that aside, screen shots are meaningless.

I found it impossible to look at the pictures in any sensible way, because:

- the flashing pink banner ad on the right

- the image was too long to see in one hit and

- loading the next image too slow

It was simply too frustrating to bother making a meaningful, detailed comparison. The opening page at least had the images together, but too small to really get any idea. I could see that there were differences. Putting a modern ASPH 50 would have given a nice point of reference.

Sorry.

John

It is possible to right click the files and save them to your machine and look at them semi-critically. I have much bigger JPGs that I would send anyone who asked.

I only posted this to stimulate some discussion, and to let you guys flex your knowledge.

I went tripod free as my shutter speed was 1/1250. Using a 50mm lens, with these newfangled "miniature cameras", anything quicker a 60th, I feel confident hand holding.

OP is sharing joy of comparing five lenses, what does it get in return, looks like ill tempered response, poor form guys.

I love to see all these querky comparisons, joy of photography.

If you feel something should have been done better please provide friendly advice not "got up wrong side of the bed" response.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

sorry we're not moving fast enough for you and your NINE posts....

The reason not much is happening here is because no one can make a definitive statement one way or another.

I don't think anyone can name all five in order, even spotted the Summar. No ones even tried.

Sorry, Jay. I wasn't intending to be rude or dismissive. Just expressing frustration.

The truth is, I'm surprised at the differences, and I will download the jpegs so I can see the differences in detail. There is no chance I can identify which lens is which, but linking them, with further detail about the lens design will be interesting.

Thanks for posting these.

Cheers

John
