Hello friends. Is there any rhyme or reason to the Leica M3 boxes. I see four different style boxes. Which box goes to which year of M3? Thanks for your help, Henry

Telling the true, between box 1 and box 2 there is another variant (year 1957 gray box) so that the total n is of 5 different boxes.

However your cameras 1,2,3 all should have box n.1 of your list, the older red one.

The last camera with ser. n. over million very very likely box n3.

Cheers

Sorry I had not take attention of the little one ...yes it is the same.

so your last M3 must be from 1959 first serie with new strap lug

may be the first issue for the grey box ????

congratulation for your boxes collection, I have some and they begin to take a lot of room...

Can someone tell me about these tags. Why the signatures? Are these the men who inspected the camera before it was allowed for sale? Some of the M3's I purchased have this tag. Did all M3's from double stroke to single stroke come with this tag?

Indeed, as printed (in German) on the tag, the signatures are by the controllers (for telemeter, speeds and general control). No idea if all new M3's came with this tag; maybe it depends where they were sold.

I think all cameras had this tag attached before leaving the factory (as I have almost all the M models samples).
