Theft

A burglary occurred whilst I was on holiday in Deya in Majorca on

Thursday 22nd September 2011 when all my Leica equipment was

stolen.

I suspect that this was an opportunist theft and they would want to sell

on quickly but they will not have the original documents or packaging

which would make it difficult to sell.

Is there a database in this forum where I can register my stolen

Leica M8.2 equipment?. I bought the camera and 4 lenses just

Or any other advice would be welcome.

Definately inform Leica and give them the serial numbers. If the equipment ever goes in for service it can be identified.

Keep a watch out on eBay (UK) and I'd suggest informing a few London retailers such as Red Dot, RG Lewis, Richard Caplan, Aperture Photographic and maybe Campkins at Cambridge etc. Also watch this local sale site.

Sorry to hear about your loss, I know how it feels - my first M8 with a couple of lenses was stolen in the train in Belgium when I returned from a holiday in Greece.

I have reported the theft to Leica and to the police, of course, and also tried the website Stolen Camera Finder - find your photos, find your camera, to no avail until today. The insurance report was a little difficult to construct due to the fact that most of the equipment came to me via Ebay, but in the end I got a partial reimbursement.

PS Mallorca is a Spanish island, the change that the camera will pop up in Britain is rather small, I presume .

Thanks all for your support. It's a difficult thing to come to terms with because the Leica system as you all know becomes part of you and to have that removed makes the loss more acute. What sticks in my gullet is that the thief will only get a few hundred pounds for it as he has no proof of ownership if he sells. My gut feeling is that it all ended up in Barcelona which is just a short ferry trip from Deia. Anyway I had a meeting with my loss adjuster a few days ago so hopefully I will get my money back, then it's back to the shop for an M9.

I've never been asked for 'proof of ownership' when I've sold camera equipment. Only for cars and property!

I should have said, to sell a 2 year old Leica with 3 lenses would prove difficult and arise suspicion if it did not have the original packaging and certification. As well as being on the stolen list which means it could never be serviced by a Leica dealer. Would you buy a Leica at the market price under those circumstances?.

Yes, if the price is right. It will be sold separately unfortunately.

Sorry for the loss. I hope your insurance company will not rob you, too.

As to buying camera gear without paper work, I am always positively surprised if I get some papers with second-hand lenses. With M bodies I guess you pretty much expect to see some papers and an original box, but some owners toss everything extra (especially once warranty is over) so it is not really a given.

very sorry to hear this theft story and i hope that you can recoup all your losses in time!

selling items with full packing and certs increases the asking price marginally. since there is feverish trading of second-hand leica items on a legal market, they are often sold on without. the only seemingly criminal aspect is that they are often over priced. it would certainly raise my suspicion if the asking price were abnormally low or if the seller didn't have any clear knowledge. i always make it a habit to ask details about a seller's history with a lens or camera when buying 2nd hand and keep records of transaction and contact information.

it's also a good idea to photograph each piece of your leica equipment with a small point and shoot camera showing serial numbers, scratches, dents, etc.. these are useful in the unfortunate event of a theft or claim.

btw, is it against forum rules to post all your stolen serial numbers and descriptions here? it is an international forum after all..

Thanks for letting us all know, and I sympathise with you in your loss.

I would hazard a guess that if they do turn up for sake anywhere decent, then it might indeed be Barcelona, or somewhere else in Spain. It might well be worth an email to Spanish dealers with numbers etc.
