Leonto -

I prefer Dav'e version in B&W with slight toning and slight softening. You might want to consider experimenting wiht some shots form time-to-time to see how they convert to B&W. I try to do that, and am often pleasently surprised. I shoud do it more often.

For anyone interested, there's a current competition run by Trinity House, the UK organisation that operates and maintains the 71 working lighthouses in the UK.

The prize is inclusion in the 2008 Calendar

I think Dave is on to something here; the rocks on the foreground distract much less in b/w allowing the eye to follow all the main lines of the picture, which you so well arranged in your composition, to the lighthouse.

Good work.

Thanks for showing.

Thank you for your comments.

Andy,

The lighthouse was taken on the Atsumi peninsula in Japan. I also like your lighthouse images on your excellent website.

Dave,

Thank you for converting the photo into B&W. Like Stuart, Daniel and Gareth already mentioned is the softness of your B&W quite appealing and it gives the image something that is missing in the color version. Here is my not so soft B&W attempt.

Regards,

Horst

Your picture is very nice, but I think it is very hard to top Dave's marvelous editing of it. That Duotone-like soft b/w is absolutely perfect, especially by hiding the distracting lines of the pavement in the foreground.

Regards,

Marcus

I agree, the BW versions are a better, but it was the colour shot that got me hooked. I love the depth of field in the photograph (and like Andy, I too like light houses, although I don't think I'd want to live in one).
