Trouble with Ridata 4GB SD Card

Based on a few recommendations in another thread, I purchased a couple of 4GB SD cards (a 4GB Ridata and a 4GB Transcend) which I received today. After some initial problems, I was able to get the Transcend card to work. However, I can't get my M8 to work with the Ridata card. When I insert the card and power up, it reads "SD Card Full". I have tried to format the card in camera several times to no avail. I thought the fix had been discussed in another thread, but I have not been able to find it. Any suggestions???

Thanks in advance.

Did you get a 4 GB 150x Pro SD or the 4GB SDHC?

The M8's abilities with the SDHC is doubtful. Being unable to format on your computer throws doubt on the card's integrity; however, I have noticed that some card readers do not do well with some cards. The Smartdisk Thunderbolt is supposed to be one of the fastest SD readers, but it is particular about which cards it will mount.

Just to chime in, I have two 4Gb Ridata 150 X Pro SD cards, only ever formatted in camera and no problems whatsoever. I will follow this thread closely because I intend to get another 6 of these cards and use that as my backup while travelling.

I think there must be something suspect in your card.

Sorry I would like to be more help, I am not crowing that my cards are ok, I am genuinely troubled if this signifies future problems. Let us know if you resolve the problem.

Tom

Marco how were you able to get the transcend cards to work? I too bought Ridata, just came yesterday, and they do not work. I also bought Kingstons and they do not work either. The only one that works is an older Lexar Platinum 1GB. I ordered 2 Extreme III 2 gb and I'll see what they do. It seems that some cameras just don't work with most cards, while others are working fine even with the same firmware.

I actually had the same issue with the Transcend initially. I put it in the camera and the LCD just blinked "0". I tried to format in the camera and it just kept running until I took the battery out. I then placed in the card reader to see if my MacBook would at least recognize the card so I could try and format it that way. However when I put in the SD, it not only was seen as a disk, but there was a folder on the SD card labeled "Leica100" . I put it back in the camera and the M8 recognized it and it has worked fine since then. Not sure what the deal is with the Ridata. Might just be a bad card. I've tried it in M8, a Treo, a Garmin Nuvi, my MacBook and Dell laptops, and none have even recognized it as an SD card. I'll keep updating this thread as I figure this one out.

The M8's abilities with the SDHC is doubtful.

I have to agree with you for now.

I ran for a new Transcend 4GB SD card a few weeks ago after reading positive comments made here. The store assistant at Bic Camera in Ginza, however, told me that any SD card larger than conventional 2GB would be in a new SDHC format and might bring up a compatibility issue when used with cameras released up until recently. In fact first I couldn't find a Transcend card in the gigantic store at all so I had to ask him for it and he brought it up from behind the counter where all expensive (exotic?) cards were stored.

I knew that my old card reader would not recognize the Transcend card so I also asked him for a SDHC card reader and he said, out of hundreds of card readers which they had in stock, ony a few new models could read SDHC cards at that time. So I also bought a simple and inexpensive Maxell SD/MiniSD reader which would go into a USB slot on my PowerBook G4.

Despite all that effort on my part, the Transcend 4GB card still refuses to be recognized by my M8 which is FW 1.09 installed. When I turn on the camera's switch, a dialog comes up and says "Attention - SD Card full" and when I try to format it the red LED brinks forever until I take the battery out. I have no problem mounting it on my PowerBook via Maxell reader, however, and I even tried formatting it in both Macintosh and MS-DOS.

So for now I am using Lexar 2GB cards with my M8, awaiting the arrival of FW 1.10 which, I hope, will unleash the M8's capability further. BTW the Transcend card, in the meantime, is giving me a full service as a 4GB USB memory.

I have the Ridata 150X Pro 4Gb data card, M8 with firmware 1.102 update, card formatted in the camera, no problems. I am keeping my Sandisk II Ultra 2Gb as a back up. There seems to be sample variations within the card manufacture, as some of us have no card problems, and some do.

Hi Guys,

Sorry, this may seem just a little off topic here. Are you certain that the cards you bought are original cards or are they fake. I just lost my temper today when I discovered that the 2gb Lexar Card that I bought at a reputable national computer dealer was fake. What should have got me thinking right off was that this card took extremely long to write the files, and then on the weekend I got the dreaded SD Full error.

A quick search on Google showed me exactly where to look on the card. Up to now I thought it was only ebay that was plagued by fakes - not anymore, the dealers also seem to be in on it. Now atleast I know what to look for before I buy cards again.
