Paolo.Battista Posted September 13, 2011 Share #1 Posted September 13, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Does anyone know which is the color depth (in bits per pixel) of the Digilux3's sensor? On the Leica site I can find this parameter for the DMR, the M cameras and the S2, but not for the Digilux 3. Best regards. Paolo

ziggurat Posted September 13, 2011 Share #2 Posted September 13, 2011 My metadata says 16 Johnny
Paolo.Battista Posted September 13, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted September 13, 2011 My metadata says 16 Johnny Yes, but that's not the A/D conversion bit color depth. Almost every RAW image have that parameter set at 16 bits (for example, my Nikon D7000 has 14 bit of color depth per pixel in the A/D conversion but the RAW images are recorded in 16 bits: don't know if they're padding zeros in order to fit 14 bits in 16). jaapv Posted September 13, 2011 Share #4 Posted September 13, 2011 Yes - they are padding zeroes and a good thing too. It prevents posterizing.
mjh Posted September 13, 2011 Share #5 Posted September 13, 2011 Does anyone know which is the color depth (in bits per pixel) of the Digilux3's sensor? Probably 12 bits.
jaapv Posted September 13, 2011 Share #6 Posted September 13, 2011 You are right, Michael. Olympus (who supplied the basics of the camera) specify 12 bits.
sfage Posted September 16, 2011 Share #7 Posted September 16, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) It's unfortunate that the D3 received the "ugly duckling award". Yes, I know it's only 7.5 MP but I've done some pretty large prints with it and I have to say, it's pretty impressive. As far as colour goes, that's one heck of a lens on the front of that thing. I don't see an issue. The files that come out of the machine are extremely good. I don't shoot digital as much as I used to but I still like the D3. As far as my experience with my D3 is concerned, it is quite a beautiful camera. 7,5 megapixel are more than enough for my 40x30 cm prints, and the Elmarit zoom is a very very good piece of glass.I made a comparison with the best Olympus zooms of the same focal range, and the Elmarit returns better the finest details of the colour shades. It's veru sharp indeed and only the Zuiko 14-35 f:2 exeeds its sharpness (but at the expense of "cutting" lots of colour shades). On the down side, the viewfinder is small and dark, it doesn't allow precise manual focusing and the autofocus is at least three generation behind most of the actual cameras. In any case, I still like to shoot with this camera, even if it's not my mainstream one.
