stump4545 Posted September 9, 2011 Share #1 Posted September 9, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) in theory if i went with a new imac with (2) harddrives one small SSD and a larger internal standard hardrive, what would be the ideal workflow method? install all programs and OS and aperture 3 on the ssd and put all photo libraries on the larger hd? or should i keep some more current photo libraries on the ssd as well? thank you. stump4545 Posted September 9, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted September 9, 2011 so ideally the 256gb SSD would have the OS, Aperture 3, all programs, my current libraries i'm working on, and at least 10% scratch space. correct? secondary drive all contain other photo libraries and files. k-hawinkler Posted September 9, 2011 Share #4 Posted September 9, 2011 Make sure there is always plenty of free space on the SSD. If performance goes down, it's time to move images to the other drive. That's my experience. K-H.
stump4545 Posted September 10, 2011 Author Share #5 Posted September 10, 2011 thanks for the advice. btw. big difference in speed having everything on ssd in your experience?
pico Posted September 10, 2011 Share #6 Posted September 10, 2011 Photoshop likes its scratch disk to be be (ideally) dedicated to scratch space, even if you think it never uses it because you have 16gb RAM. Source images on yet another disc. Adobe has a page on recommended configurations.
k-hawinkler Posted September 10, 2011 Share #7 Posted September 10, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) thanks for the advice. btw. big difference in speed having everything on ssd in your experience? The SSD is noticeable faster than a regular drive. You can get an idea here 2011 MacBook Pro -- storage performance. So, I would try out whether it makes a difference where you keep your image libraries. The SSD seems quite a bit faster for starting up, loading programs and getting work done. Best, K-H.
