cbretteville Posted September 8, 2011 Share #1 Posted September 8, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have enjoyed the first version of Günter Osterloh's "Leica M Advanced photo school" and was looking forward to an updated version so I ordered it when it was announced. It arrived this morning and I am really dissapointed. The update seems to be made up of a four page copy of the technical details of the MP and a short paragraph mewntioning the A-la carte programme. That is it.... None of the lenses launced after 2002 are mentioned, and none of the discontinued ones have notices to this effect or have been removed. Agfa film is still posted as current, as is the SF20 flash. If you have the 1st version, don't bother, save your money and buy a few rolls of Tri-X in stead. If you don't, by all means buy and enjoy the book. A lot of the information in it is well written and presented, just remember that it is a book from 2002 reprinted in 2011. Advertisement Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 Hi cbretteville, Take a look here Total disapointment: Osterloh's 2nd ed "Leica M adv photoschool". I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!

wda Posted September 8, 2011 Share #3 Posted September 8, 2011 What a missed opportunity! Ah well, we will have to wait fifteen months until Erwin Puts' new book appears. That should be more practically orientated according to his brief outline to me last Sunday.

bocaburger Posted September 8, 2011 Share #5 Posted September 8, 2011 I bought the 2nd edition when it first came out, mainly because my 1st edition had become something of an expensive collectible, plus pages were falling out (from what I found out later, it seems to be a "feature" of that book ). I didn't even know it had been reprinted. I actually prefer the first edition, as I do Brian Bower's Leica M Photography book and Eastland's M compendium, because I don't own any later lenses, nor is it likely I ever will at their going prices. But a lot of the rest of the informative sections of the book still apply, as the non-digtal-related operation of the M9 is basically the same as an M6. I've read this for years, but I have a copy that I bought when it was first published (the first edition) that has never had any binding problems. I am not complaining... cbretteville Posted September 9, 2011 Author Share #9 Posted September 9, 2011 I had the older one already, bought it in 2005, the new arrived from Amazon yesterday. Carl
Ivar B Posted September 9, 2011 Share #10 Posted September 9, 2011 I fear you are right, Carl. My first imression was that this was a total waste of money. Calling it a new revised 2nd ed. is nonsense.
Jeff S Posted September 9, 2011 Share #11 Posted September 9, 2011 I thought the enthusiasm over this edition was that it provided a much less costly alternative to the original (now selling for many times its initial price) for folks who never had a chance to buy the first book. I didn't read much hype on new content. But, I didn't really follow the issue closely; if I were a potential customer, I surely would have sought out more info on new material before purchase. I'm too old to fall for the well known "new and revised" (or "new and improved") wording on books and many other goods. I'm thankful there are others, however, who are early adopters of so many items. It saves me a lot of time and money. Jeff
Rolo Posted September 12, 2011 Share #12 Posted September 12, 2011 Completely disappointed. My copy will be going on eBay to recover some of the cost. The only time I'll pick it up again is to photograph and pack it. It mentions the MP in little detail, but no mention of the latest lenses, or even the 24D flash guns. Why bother with a revision at all, I wondered. Was hoping to avoid the cost Erwin's book, which I bought last month anyway and that is fantastic value ! So pleased he created this masterpiece. aesop Posted September 12, 2011 Share #13 Posted September 12, 2011 ...<snip> My copy will be going on eBay to recover some of the cost. The only time I'll pick it up again is to photograph and pack it. ...here's to a full and frank description of the unwanted item in your eBay listing, Rolo. Personally, I wouldn't touch the blasted thing with a barge pole. Incidentally, I wonder what young Osterloh thinks of the dissatisfaction being voiced by his adoring public? Guest #12 Posted September 14, 2011 Share #14 Posted September 14, 2011 Not sure which planet Pete (Farnz) is on mentioning 100 pages added, but in the two books I now have, the pages are identical, the increase is 4 pages total (I compared them when I got home last night), and that are the ones that contain the info on the MP. Looks like there is a 1st ed. with 256 pp., 2nd ed. with 352 pp. (2005), and 2nd ed. with 356 pp. (2011). My 2011 2nd edition is not called a revised edition at all, just a "2nd edition." ...vs. the last "Leica Compendium," which is inexplicably called a "2nd edition."
