35 Lux ASPH or 50 Lux ASPH

Lately, i asked a few questions about lens to help me make a good purchase. I own a M9 with 35 Cron IV, 50 Cron and a Zeiss Sonnar f/1.5.

I realize that i can find for about more or less the same price the following lenses:

35 Lux ASPH w/o FLE, 50 Lux ASPH and 35 Cron ASPH.

Which of these lenses will give me an increase in the rendering or a different character. A better image wide open compare to the lenses i have. Is there a big difference between the 50 Lux and the Zeiss except for the focus issue? I agree that is it a subjective matters...

I really like the way the Lux give you out of focus image and separation but a lot of the photos i saw on the web were made with a 35 Lux on a M8 so it behaved more like a 50 Lux.

Regards!!!

It's hard to believe that you can find a 50 Lux ASPH at a reasonable price. If that is the case, I say buy it without hesitation and sell the 50 Cron and Zeiss Sonnar. The 50 Lux ASPH is the standard of excellency at that focal length, it will be redundant to have anything at the 50mm.

The problem with the 35mm Lux ASPH w/o FLE is that there are notably annoying focus shift issues. I had a chrome copy a while ago, and could not use it on my digital M8. Great results on film though, but couldn't get something satisfying when it was mounted on my M8.

You can't tell a thing on the web. If you don't print, then don't waste time replacing already fine lenses. What don't you like about the lenses you have? Do you really need more speed?

Any of the lenses you have, or are considering, are quite capable of producing fine photographs and prints. Sure, I really like my 50 Summilux asph, but I lived just fine with a 50 Summicron for many years.

Rumors are afloat about a forthcoming 50 Summicron asph. There will always be newer and different lenses to have. Don't drive yourself nuts if you don't have a specific need.

......for some people. Depending on your shooting you will either find it unbearable, or a non-issue. If you buy an f1.4 lens to shoot at f2.8, it's not a great choice perhaps. But I tend to want either shallow DOF, or lots of it, so the shift never bothers me since I rarely use the troublesome 2.8-4 range.

On the upside, this is by far my favourite lens on any system and the results at f1.4 just blow me away, every single time. If you can find one, buy it immediately (they don't hang around) and see for yourself. It's a very different look to your cron - a classic lens - the new lens is all vivid colour, crisp focus wide open, and amazing 3D separation.

As you'll have guessed, I can't get enough of it.

Hi,

Speaking of the 35mm lenses (for film in my case): besides the already stated difference in color and contrast between the 35 'cron iv and the 'lux asph (also more flare resistant), one major impact on the image quality can be the shutter speed. That holds for both, motion blur of the subject and camera shake. A spontaneous indoor portrait e.g. at 1/8s and at 1/15s usually do not look the same... Sure, this may be more crucial for film, when changing ISO mid-roll is seldom recommended and film change sometimes impossible in good time.

For all lenses, I'd also look at ergonomics. The Summicrons are small and I tend to prefer that (less finder intrusion, bulk, weight). I decided not to pursue search for a Summilux 50 asph also for that reason — besides that the latest 50 'cron is just amazing.

Best,

Alexander

The 50/1.4asph at f1.4 is sharper and better corrected than the 50/1.5 Zeiss.

The Leica also shows a smoother bokeh and a little warmer color.

On the other side the Zeiss generates a very interesting classic look IMO.

Personally I own both but find the Leica more flexible as an allround lens.

Regarding 35 Lux asph FLE vs 50 Summilux asph I like both and would make the decsion between the 2 based on your needs of focal length.

I find f1.4 over f2.0 really clearly visible if you like shallow DOF and shooting wide open..
