Is the Leica X1 the gateway drug?

My Leica resumé started when I wanted a compact high-quality aps-c camera for travel exactly one year ago. There was not much choice really, and the Leica appeared to be perfect for me. Now it feels like the Leica X1 was only the manufacturer's bait. Once you had a Leica in your hands, nothing else seemed to satisfy any more. Bye bye dslr and lenses. So one year later we suddenly appear to not only own the X1, but also a digilux-2, the dlux-5, the CL set, and a M4-P with a Leica 28mm ASPH wide-angle.

Anyone been tricked into the Leica world through the Leica X1 too?

Downside for Leica is that they hook us with a $2k model, but since they have nothing incrementally affordable to offer us, we buy used gear, which in turn makes them zero money.

Yesterday I bought my 28mm lens off someone who needed the money to upgrade to the M9... so this is not all true. It's a real food chain... :)

I just bought a one month old black X1 today with 270 shots on the clock. I had a Digilux 1, Digilux 2, C-Lux 2 all brand new, a M8 used and now a slightly used X1. Plus I used my dad's DLux 5 extensively this summer before picking up the X1. The gateway drug for me was my original Digilux 1, it was a great little camera. With only the X1 in my possession now (having sold the others, regretfully), I am still continuing to look at MPs and have done so for the last year. I will have to pull the trigger on a black paint MP in the next few months.

the x1 is really a gateway drug..

i put away my 1d mark3 because i didnt like being in the rain @ sports games..

got the x1.. and i missed all the quick settings and actual control over the camera..

so i changed in my x1 for an m8 and im now just finding it great.

Well, my X1 is almost a year old, lots of dust on the sensor and a flash that doesn't want to go to sleep, a very nice compact camera but one that lets me down occasionally. If I have to do it all over again I probably will probably go for the nex, e3 or whatever Canon or Nikon will bring out...

Regarding the gateway to Leica world, I am not so sure... Just spend a wonderful three days in the Kruger National Park, saw lots of game including the big 5....Almost all my images were made with a Canon and a 70-300mm L lens. This is a beautiful very very sharp combination that's focus is spot on, every time, exposures are accurate, very easy to use, quick on start up..... well just a beautiful sorted camera and lens with no issues.......at half the price of a M9........noooooo I don't think so.......

I think it is. Its so close, yet so far away. The X1 wants to be so great, but it's plasticky construction lets me down. I've had it fixed twice and now their is dust on the sensor and the vulcanite is starting to peel. On top of that, I feel as though the magnesium alloy is about 3x too soft- the butter of metals. It damages cosmetically easily.

I got the KIWI adapter and hood to protect the lens. It also improves handling with my thumbs up.

Anyway, it got me hooked in combination with a darkroom class. Now I use my M2 most of the time! It's a gateway drug but got enchanted in a different way than they likely intended.

The number one thing it did to me was to remind me how pleasurable it is to use a camera with clean, obvious aperture and shutter speed controls. After a few weeks with the X1 I started to hate having to dive into electronic menus.

I agree, the simplicity that comes with the external aperture and shutter speed knobs are indeed very spoiling.

Which is why I'm very excited by the Sony NEX-7 (with it's two customizable wheels). That said, I still need to fiddle with the Sony for more time.

I went the opposite way. M8 then M9 and a few months ago added an X1 for casual travelling.

However, I frequently find myself wishing that I had my M9 with me when shooting with the X1 so it hasn't proved a very satisfactory solution and it will soon be moving on to a new owner I fear ....

Now waiting for my Ricoh A12 M-Module as a low cost (relatively) travel companion - perhaps mated to a Voigtlander 40mm f1.4 or a Summicron 40mm f2.0 (if I can find one).

The dealer is promising it "this week" so the excitement is mounting. And I have to say the the build quality of the Ricoh GXR is impressive in it's own right. I've been enjoying it with the 28mm and 50mm APC-C modules for some weeks now.

  • 1 month later...
  • 2 weeks later...

Shot a M camera for 30 years and sold it. Now I very happily use the X1 with incredible results. I am very happy with its incredible IQ.

M9 seems very heavy to me and M lenses are reaching fetish prices.

No plans at all to re-enter M-land.

In that sense, I now consider the X camera to be rehab, not a gateway.

Thankyasomuch!
