I prefer non-glossy over glossy anyway.Best, K-H.

Just wonder if anyone has the HP ZR30w IPS matte monitor. It is sold through HP's business division with an optional 5 year warranty. I sure love mine and because it is matte and sold for around $1250 a year ago.

I have a MacPro 5.1 6 core 3.33, 24GB 1.333 RAM, 256 boot SSD, 2x3TB master, 2x3TB RAID1 time machine all internal plus I use 2 LACIE big 4's ESATA with 4x2TB in each in RAID1 mirrored. It's probably overkill for my needs right now, but so far this year (before deletions that are coming) I have nearly 1 TB of photo files. I have an OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro Qx2 waiting in the wings for 4x4TB drives, when ever I need them. Years ago I lost 20 years worth of photographs to a Hurricane so I am paranoid about backup, backup, backup. I also use an OWC Voyager Q ESATA to make backups to 1 or 2 TB HHD that I rotate putting in a safe deposit box off site.

I would buy a Mac Pro tower and several disks configured in Raid striping for speed. If you buy enough disks, you can also add error correction. Make sure you have a separate boot disk so the raid disks covers only your working files and not the OS.

Hm, sounds like my set up :)

Raid as main drive actually slows things down, unless you have the Raid card with decent size cache memory. You add redundancy in case of disk failure, but not error correction.

My ideal Power Mac setup is:

1x 500Gb SSD (boot and working disk)

2x 1Tb RAID HDD for backup

1x 1Tb time machine

copy DNG to SSD (and the BU drive) and process with LR or Aperture on the SSD, superfast ...

Use the RAID as a copy and final result drive and the time machine helps to recover in case.

I would clone the SSD boot part with an external drive. Carbon Copy Cloner is what you could use.

ahh, sounds like my setup ...

:)

I have an iMac 27" - it does OK, but the next time I get a desk computer I'll save up for a Mac Pro tower. with hefty programs like PS, InDesign, and Final

A gentlemans' bet? The tower Macs are being phased out. Apple is dumbing down its motion picture software, de-emphasizing the towers and they might be gone as soon as next year. Is it worth a Guinness?

You woke me up at the mention of a beer! How about a Schneider Hefe Weissen?

I would love to, but the travel expense to your table is daunting. Andy lives only about 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) from me. :D
