William C Posted August 29, 2011 Share #1 Â Posted August 29, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have been looking at the X1 and finally found a ggod deal on a mint used one so I went for it and it is on its way. Â I have also a EP3 on order and it should be here in Sept. I have been using a FF DSLR for the last few years and the original thinking was to get a PEN for travelling. I am ordering the EP3 with the 14-42 zoom plus a 12mm f2.0 and I have already picked up a Panny 20mm f1.7. Â Now I am considering if I should cancel my PEN order or keep both? I can see myself bringing both cameras and have them cover different focal lenghht. The X1 overlaps with the Panny 20mm so I can get rid of that one can buy a longer tele zoom lens like the 45-200. Â If I can only keep one, I would keep the X1.

Ecaton Posted August 30, 2011 Share #4 Â Posted August 30, 2011 I have been looking at the X1 and finally found a ggod deal on a mint used one so I went for it and it is on its way. Â If I can only keep one, I would keep the X1. Â With its very fast and accurate AF, reasonable sensor performance and the meanwhile attractive mft prime and zoom lens offerings the EP3 is the superior allround tool. The fast high end lenses available, including the Olympus 12mm, Summilux 25mm and Olympus 45mm easily compensate for the slight disadvantage of having a smaller sensor. The X1 has a size advantage, but other than that, the EP3 is far more versatile.
William C Posted August 30, 2011 Author Share #5 Â Posted August 30, 2011 I have decided to keep only the X1 and cancelled the EP3 order. I noticed that in my 3 weeks vacations last month, I was carrying my 5D2 with the 35mm 1.4 lens on it most of the time, I would say 95%. I might have switched to the 70-200mm and the 18mm maybe once or twice. So I think that the X1 matches my shooting style. I cancelled the EP3 also because of the NEX7, it looks so nice on paper right now I want to see how the hands on reviews will turn out later in the year. If it is really good then it might eventually replace my Canon 5D2 setup.
phancj Posted September 5, 2011 Share #6 Â Posted September 5, 2011 Honestly if you were using the 35 1.4 on the 5D2 you will still find the images from the X1 acceptable, but the m4/3 will be pretty far off in terms of quality of rendering. The nex 7 will be suitable too, though no one has seen enough sample images to make a firm conclusion. Â I would cancel the m4/3 purchase too if I were you, my two cents. LichMD Posted September 5, 2011 Share #7 Â Posted September 5, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) This is a great question that I have been struggling with recently myself, though in a different way. I own the X1, greatest IQ of a pocketable digital camera I've ever seen. But I also have a number of M and LTM mount lenses that I use on my M8u. I've been thinking about a smaller kit for daily carry that I could use these lenses with most for street photography and environmental portraiture. As I've looked at the GXR, GF3, NEX 5N and EP3 it's clear we have an embarrassment of riches options wise at this point in time. There are also some great looking cameras on the horizon as well, the aforementioned NEX 7 as one example. No matter how nice some of these cameras sound I'm unwilling to accept the mFT crop factor and loss of detail. The EP3 would be perfect if it had an APS-C sensor and focusing assistance for manual lenses. Looks like the NEX-7 might just fit the bill. After carefully looking at all the available options I think it's best to wait, and with the great X1 IQ you can take some amazing pics while you wait Cheers
ezc203 Posted September 5, 2011 Share #8 Â Posted September 5, 2011 To be honest, I've never been impressed with the 5Dii's sensor. Always preferred the results from my digital Leica cameras. Â As with the X1, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the results when compared to your 5Dii's.
tom0511 Posted September 12, 2011 Share #9 Â Posted September 12, 2011 Hi, I would say it depends a lot how you get along with 35mm. I own both x1 and m4/3, I really prefer the size, handling and IQ from the x1. Â The downsides are a) only 35mm FOV slow AF Â If I had to decide for one I would probably decide for the x1...I just like shooting with it better. I think its fine you canceled your ep3 order. You can just see how you get along with the x1 and then decide if you are happy or not.
