Welcome, OP to X1 ownership.

I looked at your first picture of flower bed. There is expected clarity in right foreground and right side suggesting that your focusing is working, but not necessarily in the areas you would wish. Sometimes multi-point and face detection will produce unwanted results. I use 1-point or spot so that I am in control of where I want the sharpest plane of focus to be.

Spend time reading through the manual with camera in hand. It is time well spent. Go back to the manual, from time to time, to add more to your mastery of the camera. The X1 is a 'thinking' photographer's camera! That often explains why it does not appeal to the 'point-and-shoot' consumer.

Thanks for the detailed assessment of my first attempts with the new camera

Points duly noted and now i am getting around the controls i think i have now remedied the 'multi focus' imaging that you have touched upon

I now use spot focus and am also using the (Leica) viewfinder which makes it feel and act more like a 'camera' in the true sense of the word

Thanks again for the comment

Off now to point and press some more

Hi prk60091,

Thank you for the compliment and I apologise if I appeared critical of the JPEG image quality. It was not intended in any context other than a comparative.

I do personally feel that I can generate a better conversion, in regards to what I was looking, and exposing for when taking the photograph with a DNG file rather than the JPEG. This is of course just my opinion.

I would also like to add that I would consider my Lightroom skills to be functional at best and also the adjustments I do make to be few. They are basically adding contrast, desaturation, noise reduction (off) and sharpening (lower radius, higher detail normally).

This is an interesting thread. I would be glad to hear the thoughts of others regarding the JPEG engine and what settings work best for them.

Mark,

If you still struggle to get the results you feel others do perhaps you could give some examples (links) of what you would like to achieve with the camera?
