Hello all

Very new to the X1 family - i picked up a 2nd hand one from an official dealer with handgrip, viewfinder and case for a good price (i think)

Having played around a little i just dont quite seem to get the clarity that some other (most) users appear to get on here

I can compose a scene and centre what i want etc it is the actual image quality/clarity that is letting me down

I have the settings all on factory standard and am using auto mode for all aspects

I appreciate this isnt ideal and need to finish the manual and have a better and more indepth trial and error session with settings manually before i really ask but any guiders just to help me along please

Thanks in advance

Mark

without seeing an example of what you mean by "actual image quality/clarity" it is hard to assist....

post a link to a photo (upload to flickr or somewhere ) so we can assist.....

Hello there

Thanks for the response

Not sure how to upload - does dropbox work on here?

https://www.dropbox.com/home#/Leica%20X1:::

If it does then these are my contenders for 'worst pic with a great camera'

If not then will try another way

All the ones in this sample folder are auto everything in the settings - no messing, no funny bits

Thanks in advance

Mark

SORRY ALL - ITS THESE (finally sussed it i think)

Those work indeed. However, you might consider issuing a warning because they're really large and may overwhelm some user's bandwidth (and cost of data transfer).

your snaps are not as bad as you advertised and the dog photos are usable and cute;)

i don't remember what the default settings are/were

but this is what i would try:

first: take your aperture off of automatic (i generally keep mine @f/2.8 - i like a shallow depth of field) but for these purposes set it at f/5.6

second: i would keep the shutter speed at A

third: i would set an ISO (for outdoors ISO 100 is a good spot) and take it off of auto

fourth: i would reset the AF to the 1Spot and then when focusing put the spot on the part of the area you want focused......

i am sure you will get loads more advice- but i am w/o my camera today (it is home and i am not @ home) and this is the best i can do from memory

next i would read as a "guide" leica.overgaard.dk - Thorsten Overgaard's Leica Sites - Leica Digilux 2 sample photos and tests (as well as Panasonic DMC-LC1) - Page 1 of 3 from forum member thorsten overgaard....much of what he writes for the digilux2 is applicable to the x1 and then i would skim for theory his m9 pages leica.overgaard.dk - Thorsten Overgaard's Leica Pages - Leica M9 Digital Rangefinder Camera what works for exposure on the m9 works equally well on the x1

and take lots of pictures (as practice)

The flowers in front are perfectly in focus as are the tiny white hairs around the dogs mouth. You might try putting the camera in A ( aperture ) mode and using a smaller aperture to get greater dof. Try f/8.

they are looking quite good,

maybe, if you are shooting in JPG mode, put the sharpening on +1 and contrast +1, it will make it look just that little bit more crispy..

if raw.. well then you do the editing so just go untill it is to your liking.

All,

Thank you very much for the positive comments so far

Despite what has beed said, i feel my pics arent up to the standard of a lot of other users on here

Still dont quite get the crispness and clarity that some others have managed

I will try the different setting options and see where they end up

I will also practice by taking lots more shots as well

For additional info i shoot in jpeg superfine only and dont want to have to manipulate in any way afterwards

Any further comments would be greatly received also

Hi Mark,

The images you have posted seem in line with the results you should expect from this camera in JPEG mode. I would second the advice of taking some shots at F5.6 with spot focus.

If you really do not want to post process your images then your control is limited to the in camera parameters. Personally I find the results from the DNG files to be far superior to the JPEGs so would strongly suggest you look at processing your files in Lightroom if your second hand purchase included the license.

don't let anyone bully you into shooting raw jpg is perfectly acceptable and you can get some very very good results with this camera shooting jpg

i second the suggestion above about increasing the contrast 1 level from default

i also increase the saturation 1 level from default as well

i do not increase sharpening at all- my opinion it introduces some artifacts in the image which are not pleasing to me. ymmv

Again

Thank you very much for the positive responses and comments

I will have a play with the settings mentioned and see where that leads me

The article link for the Digilux 2 user was very interesting to read and makes perfect sense (must take note and put into practice)

Little steps and often seem to be the order of progression so i will endeavour on this basis

I wont be using any editing software and will keep files as superfine jpg for the moment (see above little steps)

Hope to post some (better) pics in the near future

Thanks again

Mark

. . . . I find the results from the DNG files to be far superior to the JPEGs

i respectfully disagree with your opinion that DNG files are "far superior" than jpgs.......

your flickr feed images are very very good. You must be very proficient at LR/Aperture/Photoshop... however most users are not LR/Aperture/Photoshop experts therefore the results from processing in LR/Aperture&PS is going to be less than optimal I find that the Leica jpg engine is better than "good enough" for most users

i support this...

you really require programs like LR/PS/NIK software to really make something of your raws.. and then you even need knowledge of the processes..
