budhudson Posted August 29, 2011 Share #1  Posted August 29, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello all  Very new to the X1 family - i picked up a 2nd hand one from an official dealer with handgrip, viewfinder and case for a good price (i think)  Having played around a little i just dont quite seem to get the clarity that some other (most) users appear to get on here  I can compose a scene and centre what i want etc it is the actual image quality/clarity that is letting me down  I have the settings all on factory standard and am using auto mode for all aspects  I appreciate this isnt ideal and need to finish the manual and have a better and more indepth trial and error session with settings manually before i really ask but any guiders just to help me along please  Thanks in advance  Mark Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

prk60091 Posted August 29, 2011 Share #11  Posted August 29, 2011 SORRY ALL - ITS THESE (finally sussed it i think) http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3398918/Leica%20X1/L1000073.JPG  http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3398918/Leica%20X1/L1000075.JPG  http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3398918/Leica%20X1/L1000117.JPG  http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3398918/Leica%20X1/L1010067.JPG   your snaps are not as bad as you advertised and the dog photos are usable and cute;)   i don't remember what the default settings are/were but this is what i would try: first: take your aperture off of automatic (i generally keep mine @f/2.8 - i like a shallow depth of field) but for these purposes set it at f/5.6 second: i would keep the shutter speed at A third: i would set an ISO (for outdoors ISO 100 is a good spot) and take it off of auto  fourth: i would reset the AF to the 1Spot and then when focusing put the spot on the part of the area you want focused......  i am sure you will get loads more advice- but i am w/o my camera today (it is home and i am not @ home) and this is the best i can do from memory  next i would read as a "guide" leica.overgaard.dk - Thorsten Overgaard's Leica Sites - Leica Digilux 2 sample photos and tests (as well as Panasonic DMC-LC1) - Page 1 of 3 from forum member thorsten overgaard....much of what he writes for the digilux2 is applicable to the x1 and then i would skim for theory his m9 pages leica.overgaard.dk - Thorsten Overgaard's Leica Pages - Leica M9 Digital Rangefinder Camera what works for exposure on the m9 works equally well on the x1  and take lots of pictures (as practice) Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

I would second the advice of taking some shots at F5.6 with spot focus. Â If you really do not want to post process your images then your control is limited to the in camera parameters. Personally I find the results from the DNG files to be far superior to the JPEGs so would strongly suggest you look at processing your files in Lightroom if your second hand purchase included the license. budhudson Posted August 30, 2011 Author Share #17  Posted August 30, 2011 Again  Thank you very much for the positive responses and comments  I will have a play with the settings mentioned and see where that leads me  The article link for the Digilux 2 user was very interesting to read and makes perfect sense (must take note and put into practice)  Little steps and often seem to be the order of progression so i will endeavour on this basis  I wont be using any editing software and will keep files as superfine jpg for the moment (see above little steps)  Hope to post some (better) pics in the near future  Thanks again  Mark Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

You must be very proficient at LR/Aperture/Photoshop... however most users are not LR/Aperture/Photoshop experts therefore the results from processing in LR/Aperture&PS is going to be less than optimal I find that the Leica jpg engine is better than "good enough" for most users Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
