With those, any camera or lens set will be fine.

philipus Posted August 29, 2011 Share #23 Posted August 29, 2011 Will be going to Edingburgh, Inverness, and taking a cruise on the Lockes and the coast of the Highlands. I plan to take my M9, a late 35Lux pre-Asph (Germany), 24 Elmarit, and 50 Lux Asph. Do you think I'll need a telephoto. I have a Sony A900 with a 70-300 that I can also take. But hate to lug around the weight. Perhaps I should just add a Tele-Elmarit 90 for the M9 and forget about the SLR? Thanks for your input, It all depends on how you photograph. I would, however, skip the Sony and bring 24 (for landscapes), 50 (for people, street etc) and 90 (for tele work). What needs to be magnified (mainly from the 24 or the 90) can be cropped in post-processing. Watch out for midges - seriously! Bring a pipe or some cigars And enjoy! I envy you - I have very fond memories of Scotland from when I studied in Edinburgh. It's such a lovely country. /philip

Forget the Amex card - hardly anyone up here takes it anymore except in the major city centres, and even there many don't. A Visa will do nicely. The midges are around till the first frost, so probable another 6 weeks or so, but don't let them put you off. If there's a bit of wind they disappear, so except for the odd day there's always a way of avoiding them. But there will be rain! But remember the weather changes many times in each day, so as long as you have layers you can easily change, you'll be fine. Have a great time. The scenery north-west of Inverness is unforgettable. jaapv Posted August 29, 2011 Share #25 Posted August 29, 2011 I can second that. Amex acceptance is very limited in the UK-oriented world. But you might need a credit card visiting the Kirk, Wester Balblair....

Thanks, we are really looking forward to it! Have our foulweather gear and waterproof shoes ready. Yes, we know about the midges. We also have them here in Massachusetts. Some people call them no-see-ems here. They hang around here until early Sep, but I think hurrican Irene has probably taken them all to Maine and Canada by now. As for credit cards, the important thing for us from the US is to get cards that do not charge that outrageous 3.5% "foreign transaction fee". TshawM8 Posted August 29, 2011 Share #27 Posted August 29, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Crop if you need more reach. Unless you will be printing very large an 18MP camera should give some leeway.
