maccarma Posted August 25, 2011 Share #1 Posted August 25, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I'm an avid Leica collector, and use to buy online old cameras and lenses. How to understand when a camera or a lens needs a "repair service" in Solms? How much usually is the cost of that? Thanks for help

We cannot know whether there is (likely) viewfinder yellowing, or whether the shutter was activated often enough to keep the lubrication from gumming up. Besides, being a collector rather than a user what do you care about the camera's functioning? If you sell 'em, just suggest "probably needs a CLA due to age" and save some money. I don't ever believe it when sellers say "recent CLA" without a receipt.
maccarma Posted August 26, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted August 26, 2011 Ok, I was meaning: in "normal" terms of use every how long a Leica should be sent to Solms for review? After 5 years? 10 years?
bill Posted August 26, 2011 Share #4 Posted August 26, 2011 That's still impossible to say; define "normal". My M7 went in after about 10 years to have the DX reader update and a wash and brush up. My M2 is still going strong on one CLA in 50 years. My IID had a CLA after 75 years, so should be good for another 75... Regards, Bill
earleygallery Posted August 26, 2011 Share #5 Posted August 26, 2011 There's no need to send any older Leica to Solms. There are many well respected camera repairers out there (see sticky thread for more details). A CLA is only necessary if there's a problem (i.e. shutter not running correctly, rangefinder out). If the camera is working well then my attitude is to leave well enough alone, or, if it ain't broke don't fix it.
