Advertisement Posted August 17, 2011 Posted August 17, 2011 Hi capebuf, Take a look here Leica APO televid 77 spotting scope lens scratched. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted August 17, 2011 Share #2 Posted August 17, 2011 I think you have more chance of a sensible reply on a spotting scopes forum. This is a camera forum, so in general our knowledge about scopes is quite limited The Optics Talk Forums
ho_co Posted August 18, 2011 Share #3 Posted August 18, 2011 I also have no knowledge of the spotting scopes, but I think the sport optics division of Leica is the same as the camera division. So your best bet would probably be to contact Customer Service at your Leica distributor; if they can't give you the right information, they'll at least be able to tell you who can. budrichard Posted August 18, 2011 Share #4 Posted August 18, 2011 Look through the scope. Can you see clearly? If you can see clearly, then nothing need be done. Scratches and bubbles do not image as linear or round artifacts, they just affect the optical quality depending on the amount of scratching or bubbles. All optical glass contains bubbles of some size and its usually not a concern. should be a nice scope!--Dick
Ivar B Posted August 18, 2011 Share #5 Posted August 18, 2011 The fluorite glass used in these scopes is very soft and scratches are very easy to get. That is why I always protect my Televid with a UV-filter. I should think that you need a lot of scratches for it to show, but I am sure that Leica will replace the front lens element and this is not likely to cost a fortune either. budrichard Posted August 20, 2011 Share #6 Posted August 20, 2011 Can you quote some hardness figures for this glass versus other Leica glass? I suspect that this glass is actually not any different than ordinary glass and the Fluorite in the glass makes one think that it is like a Fluorite element.-Dick
jaapv Posted August 20, 2011 Share #7 Posted August 20, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Is the scratch resistance not mainly determined by the hardness of the coating?
Ivar B Posted August 20, 2011 Share #8 Posted August 20, 2011 I am no expert, but I believe I have read that fluorite glass is soft and it is easy to scratch. I guess that a very very thin coating surface does not offer any protection against impact. I am not 100 % certain, but I believe I have read someplace that also other users have experienced this problem, and that is why I protected my Apo-Televid with a UV-filter from day one. jaapv Posted August 20, 2011 Share #9 Posted August 20, 2011 I do know, Ivar, that Leica uses special coatings on their camera lenses to make the front and rear element more scratch resistant.
