This was one of the most beautiful things that I've ever seen. It surfaced after a night of torrential rains.

 

 

Does anyone have any idea of what this might be?

Monotropa uniflora also referred to as Indian pipe.

This plant is not a fungus despite its lack of chlorophyll, and indeed a first encounter is an extraordinary event.

Present everywhere in Canada and Northern US.

Your inventive comparison to a sea-horse (hippocampus) is quite a good one!

Attached is a local example not as nice as yours.
