mattman Posted August 17, 2011 Share #1 Posted August 17, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello folks - Just picked up a R3 Safari and replaced the standard 2 coin cells with a single fresh 1/3N that I had on hand and I get no battery light when pressing the test button and the meter inside the viewfinder does not move at all - I can snap pictures and shutter seems to be releasing fine. Battery is new and has been checked as 100% on my ZTS tester. Any input would be appreciated - regards Matt

doubice Posted August 17, 2011 Share #3 Posted August 17, 2011 Matt, Another warm welcome. You say that the shutter "seems to be releasing fine". Have you tried setting the shutter to 'Auto' and releasing it at varying f-stops? The shutter should set different times and this can be discerned by ear or, by looking at the shutter while the back is opened. Another question - do you wear glasses? Can you see the entire finder frame? The meter display is on the right side of the finder frame. Does it happen in both metering modes - spot and averaging? Is the meter needle stuck and if so, where? Does it move at all? If the shutter fires correctly, that would indicate fresh batteries and a clean battery compartment. If you still cannot see the meter display, than that is probably where the problem lies. Best, Jan
earleygallery Posted August 18, 2011 Share #4 Posted August 18, 2011 Is the battery the right way round? If you set the shutter dial to 1s does the shutter stay open for 1s (the R3 shutter works on one mechanical speed and B if the battery fails). Unlikely that both the battery test light and the meter display would fail.
mattman Posted August 24, 2011 Author Share #5 Posted August 24, 2011 Welcome to the forum Matt Are the contacts inside the camera battery well nice and clean? Yes the battery well is clean and the small metal tab that comes up from inside the well appears to be fine and making contact with the battery

Best, Jan Thanks Jan In the automatic mode I do see the Orange A at the top in the viewfinder - changing the F stop does not affect the shutter release speed - even setting the shutter release manually does not change the speed of release I do not wear glasses and can see the entire viewfinder - needle does not move at all
DaveO Posted August 25, 2011 Share #7 Posted August 25, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a Nikon FM2n, you have to pull out the wind lever part way to turn on the meter. could your camera work like that also? DaveO
earleygallery Posted August 25, 2011 Share #8 Posted August 25, 2011 No, the R3 has an on/off switch. As long as the battery is the correct type, good and the right way round then it would appear that the electrics have gone awol. Probably not worth the cost of repair (although I'd still get an estimate).
