Second camera too keep, X100, X1 or Digilux 2

Just a different thought, perhaps another M body would be a good backup. You could sell all three and easily swing a mint M6, or maybe save a little more for a second M8. That would enable common, shared lenses and handling across the system.

Another thought: the shiny new Canon S100 is likely a good choice. The now-ancient S90 is a competent bargain.

I don't know what you are shooting and the criticality of a backup body, but perhaps sell all three and shoot with your one reliable Leica. If it fails, would you have time to stop by a local Best Buy to pick up one of the aforementioned Canons as a stopgap?

Oh, and if push comes to shove, I prefer the X1 with the current firmware. It is a bit quicker than the X100. I have mine dressed up with the Leica 36mm finder (essential), the handgrip (optional), and a $0.99 cap leash (also essential). Skip the tri-petal auto cap, as it vignettes the flash.

Enjoy.

Sell all and buy the Ricoh GXR with the M mount. Crop 1.5 and your M lenses get a bit more tele range or with the 15mm Voigtlander, a red-edge free ultra wide lens.......

Similar to the CCD sensor of the M8 the Ricoh has no AA filter for max. sharpness, has shifted microlenses, all in all a much more modern taylor made sensor for the short registers of M lenses.

Benefit: only one lens system, much better high ISO capability, telerange much easier to focus and and and.

And if your eyes become tired after 10 hours shooting, put a AF lensor with 28 or 50mm to the GXR body and shoot more......

Two different bodies in your bag but only one set of lenses which complement each other.

Smart.

You can buy cheapo R lenses and adapt them as well. Smart too......

I hope you all don't mind my tacking on to this thread.

I am in a sort of similar predicament, but the inverse. I am giving serious consideration to selling my M8/50-1.4 and replacing it with an X1 or more likely, the Digilux 2 and have not seen anyone in the thread suggest keeping the D-2... yet.

No its not! The AF speed of the X100 is mediocre, but clearly faster than the X1 (after FW update!).

X100. I have this and use it alongside my M9. I wouldn't say it was a back up but more an alternative camera for situations where I find it more appropriate than the M9. hybrid viewfinder is just amazing, I love being able to change between the 2 just at the flick of a switch for accurate and close up framing. I also don't feel that it is less sturdy or cheaper feeling than the X1 and would even say that it feels to me to be the other way round!!
