GeebeeWien Posted August 15, 2011 Share #1 Posted August 15, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi Folks, I do have a problem: I have acquired this beautiful Summarit 1,5/50mm for my Leica M8 and now I am searching for a solution to fix a UV/IR filter in front of the lens. I have been in contact with Foto Huppert, and unfortunately B+W does not make 41mm filters anymore. The only solution would be a 41 to 46mm stepup, which I don't think is really elegant, as part of the beauty of this lens is its compactness. Any other ideas what to do? Thanks Georg

Ronniek Posted August 15, 2011 Share #2 Posted August 15, 2011 How about a 41 to 43 step up.
GeebeeWien Posted August 15, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted August 15, 2011 Well that would be good, but do you know a source where to get one? 41-46 seems quite common, but 41-43 not so much...
jaapv Posted August 15, 2011 Share #4 Posted August 15, 2011 Buy any of the original (usually yellow) filters for the lens, the bayonet type, and replace the glass by one of a 40 mm or 40.5 mm filter. Check first which one will fit best.
roydonian Posted August 15, 2011 Share #5 Posted August 15, 2011 How about a 41 to 43 step up. Any kind of step-up adaptor is going to create problems when used in conjunction with the Summarit's XOONS clamp-on lens hood. It might be possible to fit the hood, then reach inside the front of the hood and screw in the filter and adaptor. Best regards, Doug
Snuff Posted August 24, 2011 Share #6 Posted August 24, 2011 I have Jupiter-3 50/1.5 and use 40.5-43mm step up ring from ebay to use 43mm UV/IR filter. 40.5mm-43mm 40.5-43mm 40.5 to 43 Step Up Ring Adapter | eBay Also I use this 43mm lens hood: 43mm Vented Metal Lens Hood For Voigtlander Leica M | eBay And this 52mm lens cap for the hood: NEW 52 52mm Side-Pinch Lens Cap for Filters | eBay But the best solution I think is to use this 40.5 rubber lens hood with thread for filters: General Brand 40.5mm Screw-In Rubber Lens Hood B&H Photo Video And use step up ring 40.5-43mm and use 43mm uv/ir filter. This combination will be shorter - the filter and step up ring will be inside the lens hood!
Ecar Posted August 24, 2011 Share #7 Posted August 24, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Try a 40.5 filter with some thin tape wrapped around the filter thread. Not ideal, but should work.
gravastar Posted August 25, 2011 Share #8 Posted August 25, 2011 Buy any of the original (usually yellow) filters for the lens, the bayonet type, and replace the glass by one of a 40 mm or 40.5 mm filter. Check first which one will fit best. Georg, I did exactly what Jappv suggests. You can buy the old Leica filters on eBay, they bayonet and twist onto the Summarit and have a felt friction ring on the inside of the mount to prevent them from rotating and falling off. Their glass is easily removed and replaced with the glass from a B+W 486 UV-IR cut. I think the replacement glass I used was from a B+W 43mm filter. I have a spare original Summarit filter mount and retaining ring I can send you if you want to pursue this method. The glass has been removed so all you would have to do is get the B+W filter and extract the glass, I can tell you an easy way to do that. I'll have to check tomorrow that the B+W filter size was 43mm - I've got the old mount I removed the glass from. The beauty of this method is you can still use the original Summarit XNOOS rectangular hood. PM me if you want to follow this up. Bob.
gravastar Posted August 25, 2011 Share #9 Posted August 25, 2011 I can confirm that the glass from the 43mm B+W 486 UV-IR cut filter is the correct one to use. It's fractionally small in the Summarit mount but is held quite securely by the filter retaining ring. The glass has two sides. One with an antireflection coating the other with the UV-IR multilayer interference filter. The UV-IR interference filter side is softer and should face the lens. To identify the filter sides place the corner of a paper tissue against the glass and observe it's magenta reflection. If there's a gap (equal to the glass thickness) between the corner and it's reflection then the antireflection coating faces you. If there's no gap then the softer UV-IR interference side faces you. 43mm B+W UV-IR filters from www.fofo-huppert.de have catalog numbers Bestell-Nr.:343486 and Bestell-Nr.:943486 Bob.
