Ur-Leica

Just thought you'd be interested to see a photo of the original Ur-Leica and a print made from one of the original surviving Oscar Barnack negatives of his shots of Wetzlar.

I was lucky enough to be able to see the Ur-Leica in the flesh during a visit to Solms last week. Pretty awesome, especially considering it's the only one in the world and insured for $5m!

I know the coffee shop in question, and had lunch there on my last free day in Wetzlar in October 2010. I’d spent several hours visiting the locations of both of the houses where Oskar Barnack used to live, followed by a long walk around the streets of the old town trying to relocate the location of the original optical institute founded by Kellner. So by the time my cake and coffee arrived, I was more than ready for both.

As my rather out-of-date avatar photograph shows, during my first visit to Solms in the 1990s I not only saw the Ur Leica, but was allowed to handle it – something quite unthinkable given today’s conservation standards. But the camera seems to have survived the subsequent years better than I have, so no harm was done.

Best regards,

Doug
