Mine arrived 4 days ago - serial # 31067** - Black. Not one problem as of yet and I am hoping none manifest as it will be my only camera. I am havig to sell my MP to fund this. It's a bit scary for sure with all of these reports. I hope you get a good, working camera. Is there a poll anywhere of M8 owners - problems vs no problems?

J Bach also inspected mine (arrived a couple of days ago), ser no 31036xx, seems fine so far, except for a really easy on/off switch...i don't know if it is as easy as the other folks have been complaining about, that got fixed on those cameras that got sent back from the first batch, or not....

POKO, I am really sorry to hear about your problem. I had the exact same issue with the DMR. After about 1000 shots, it developed a line like the one you are showing. It is caused by a bad pixel causing a chain reaction down the sensor line. Normally I believe it can be eliminated by turning that pixel off or having it mapped out in the firmware. I am not sure if Leica does this. In any case, I was in Japan at the time and I had to send the camera to Germany. They "fixed" it and sent it back to me, but it had another sensor line failure in a different place. I had bought the camera from Tony Rose, and he talked to Roger Horn at Leica USA and got it replaced immediately. The replacement had excessive noise at high ISO's, which Leica USA fixed. Since then (about a year), it has been fine. I can say that Leica makes superb lenses and cameras, but their expertise does not extend to Kodak, Imacon, Jenoptik and so on. I don't think they are the best at integrating their cameras and lenses with these other makers' technology. Despite this, if you are lucky and don't have any errors, you will have a great time. If you do have errors, at least they will try to fix it, and do so happily until it works...even if that means replacing the camera and then fixing the replacement! Despite all the troubles I had with the DMR initially, I am satisfied with it as a superb camera, when it is working...I like the M8 even better, so I hope I don't have to deal with any of the same issues.

Dear POKO,

I know just what you feel like. I am currently on number four replacement for my 20" Intel iMac and it is still defective. On this one the airport does not work properly. When you pay for a premium product like a Leica or an Apple Mac, you feel robbed when some lazy or incompetent person at the factory has not bothered to do any proper quality control.

I only rejoined the forum recently having sold my Digilux 2 last year (replaced under warranty with a defective CCD after one failed repair). If I had read all the posts, I would have had serious doubts about buying the M8. Luckily, touch wood etc, mine seems OK so far. It would seem to me they are taking the LOTUS cars approach (sorry Pete - but you know it stands for Lots Of Trouble Usually Serious!), getting the customers to do their development - not what we expect. The good point is that they seem to be taking a very pro-active approach to warranty claims, which is just as well.

BTW, why do people think it's necessary to conceal their serial numbers with --XX ?

Gerhard:

I've never figured that out, either. People who write questions to firearms magazines do the same thing, ie. conceal part of the gun's serial number with XXs. Perhaps it's just a superstition about revealing something that someone could steal -- who knows?

Craig,

Stealing an item would not require knowing its exact serial number ...

Superstition is a more likely explanation, just as some cover the Leica logo with duct tape. Most thieves would rather steal more digital-looking cameras anyway.

Another unsolved mystery.

G.

Mine was also inspected by J. Bach. It's a black M8 serial no. 31063xx. I've had it for 10 days with no problems yet. The shutter speed dial is a little tight, but compared to the kind of problems we're usually hearing about I'm OK with that.
