M9 locked up leading to a very important photo missed.

Yes. Leica is addressing the problem. It is a very difficult one as it is impossible to replicate or provoke at will. Btw I am sure you did format the card in the M9 before use?. ( Not to shift blame but to rule out a cause!)

Jaap,

Please note I didn't change the font size or color, I am just being bold. :D

Please, let me just point out that my contention all along has been that the M9 has an intermittent problem.

This is the first time I see you confirming • that there is a product-wide problem and • that it is intermittent.:)

Amazing! What's next?

I will now stop flogging the issue. There is no point in beating a dead horse.

Thanks, K-H.

I said nothing about product- wide here. nor have I ever denied there was a problem with an unspecified number of cameras ranging from 0.001% to 99.999% . My objection all the time was and still is that the extrapolation from a very limited number of cameras in this forum to "all M9s in existence" is unwarranted speculation.

I don't think I would ever spend time deleting images in the middle of a shoot: not only does it take up valuable time, and take your eyes off the scene, but too many things can go wrong.

And how is that relevant? The camera shouldn't lock up and need a battery out reset just because the user clicks the delete button during image preview.

The camera shouldn't lock up. It is probably not user error. However, those of us that follow this forum know that at least some M9's have issues with memory cards and in-camera deleting, not formatting in camera and other seemingly mundane procedures can trigger these intermittent lockups. I have had none of these issues with my M9 (knock on wood), but I learn from the forum to always format in the camera, not delete in camera and leave some storage 'headroom' on the card, if possible. I shouldn't have to do this with a $7,000 camera, but I do in an effort to avoid having problems others have had. In the meantime, let's hope Leica comes up with a fix.

Never ever swap cards between cameras or any other equipment that uses SD(HC) (I am assuming that the card had been used before).

One of my M8 cards stopped working after I had briefly used in in my Palm Tx organiser. Format in camera did not revive it, had to format in my PC card reader & then format in camera to resuscitate. Not useful when on the road.

That it sometimes seems to work makes this exercise all the more risky.

Hi

Well using some one elses card for critical photo shoot seems incautious, pros used to buy film from same batch and test samples first...

I'd not use a USB or memory card from anyone even in a laptop, e.g. boot virus...

Start with formatted empty card(s) at beginning of shoot, back up as you go along...

Not reading user manual & all the web advice ditto.

Nice of you to tell us though thanks.

Hi Noel, while you are quite right, that is not best practice it does happen. I used to work for a large photo studio with six photographers and it was not uncommon to swap cards during a shoot if we were running out of space. We could not convince our employer to buy more cards - I kid you not! We were all shooting the same type Canon and there was never an issue. OK, we may have been lucky that we kept getting away with it.

Now I have my own business, so when I employ other photographers for a shoot I download their cards to my mac. There is no way around it for me so I am relying on the lack of viruses for OS X and a good antivirus program.

Why would you want to delete a photo before taking that superbly important shot:confused:Doesn't make sense to me?

What's done its done. Doesn't make any sense now. Don't blame him. It's the camera we all know that but we don't wont to admit it. Some folks defend it like they have shares or something in Leica company.

Let's be realistics. If delete button is there it should work. Why do we allways have to wear gloves aroubd this camera. What? We can delete the files ONLY if all the points bellow are meet:

Full moon

Temperature of 21.3 degrees

North west orientation of the camera

Camera should sit on a perfect horizontal surface

Away from electromagnetic fields

Etc etc.

To reinforce earlier comments by others, while this should not have happened -- while taking a series of photos or ones likely to be important keepers, I never delete or even check images on the screen. While walking up to a photo opportunity (usually people) I might snap off a picture and check the screen quickly before engaging the subject(s). Lots of time later in post processing or in a quiet moment to do so. In fact I almost never delete in the camera anyway, just later delete on the computer and then from the card when re-formatting.

Hello again from the original poster. Thanks Jaap and all for the comments.

I formatted in camera. I am glad Leica knows of this problem and for the record, I have had NO M9 problems whatsoever!!!!! EVER, never until now.

Welcome, you have joined the intermittent M9 problem club now.

Best, K-H.

OP here again. I forget to mention that I did NOT overwrite. I pressed format in camera and then pressed "yes" and the card was knew, just out of the box.

same with Jaguar automobiles of a certain vintage or Keeler ophthalmoscopes

owners of such fine equipment recognize these quirks & learn to avoid problems

I almost never delete a file from the camera & will try to never do this in the midst of a shoot after reading Tappan's woeful tale

I am trying to avoid chimping altogether & I believe Leica choice of LCD for the M9 was an intentional effort to limit this dubious practice :)

This way of thinking would lead to Leica deleting the delete button.

I had a 1985 Jag XJ6 and would not consider it to be "fine equipment." They did pioneer the view that if intermittent windshield wipers was a good idea then maybe other things should be intermittent too. My mechanic told me it was a very reliable car from his perspective. I did learn to avoid problems by not driving it.

SD cards are £}~<{|!!. Today I shot four innocuous shots on my Digilux 2 using a Memorette 4Gb card ( that I knew was dodgy) It worked fine in the camera but three of four files were unreadable and it induced a full crash of my MacPro:eek:

Pretty soon you qualify as an experienced beta tester! :D :D :)

I'm from the view that if you're going to build something for a purpose it should work for it under normal conditions. At the moment the M9 is not doing this, the camera locking up and erasing photos is not normal nor should just be accepted and shrugged off.

Sure it might be certain cards and that the cards don't strictly adhere to a certain guideline the Leica requires but looking around at other cameras the M9 does stand out with compatibility if it is this issue.

I've used and had the problem with multiple cards (different brands) and so far I've not had the issue with a Transcend 16gb card so looks like I might finally be in the clear but something is going on with certain cards and/or conditions which at the very least should seriously be looked in to since it's something which keeps cropping up here.
