Any ideas on processing this Sunset London Pano?

Hi all,

Posting a shot I took from the roof level of our building in Canary Wharf on Sat. Went up there for the sunset.

This is a 6-shot pano, taken on a nocti at f/2.8.

Had to shoot through a thick window, as there's no areas on the roof that aren't enclosed for safety. It was tinted some kind of horrible greeny/blue.

I like the shot, and I think it could be worth spending some time on, to make it really pop on a print, but I'm just not happy with the colour and deciding on how light/dark the foreground should be.

I've had two prints at 13x19 on my Espon so far, and they just look at bit 'meh'. It's about a 43-megapixel image, so will easily print much larger, but I want to get it right first.

I'm disappearing up my own monitor at the moment, I have no colour calibration reference for the image. It was shot at fixed WB of 5800. Just looking for some inspiration from anyone please, or I'll just ditch this and return to it after a break I think!

I take it you want to dramatize the colours ;)

Go to LAB, tweak the A channel curve to get your magentas in, maybe a bit of correction (specifically reduce the oversaturated yellow) on the B curve, do the L curve whilst you are here anyway and go back to RGB.. Use saturation adjustments and levels to finetune.

The reason to go to LAB is that if you stay in RGB and adjust the colours in saturation, you will adjust the luminosity as well. In LAB you are working on the colors only in the A and B channel and adjust the luminosity independently in L.

If you really want to go to town you would have to do pseudo-HDR first.

Reds, here is a quick alternative for you to consider. Colour is such a personal sensation. I have warmed the sunset and left the clouds slightly threatening; but the blue could be reduced. I have also brought out more of the twinkly lights!

Thanks guys - apologies for my tardy response - been a bit busy.

@microview - your take made me chuckle, as I just cooled down the buildings in the version I posted. Had them warmer in the last one - you brought the illumination up a bit though which looks better. I mean - it's at sunset, so they're not supposed to be too brightly lit anyway - but it just didn't translate too well in print, which was part of my original dilemma!

@jaapv - Thanks, it's already been through LAB, to separate the colours a bit, although didn't do too much with the L channel in there. Didn't want it to look toooo OTT.

@wda - very striking, but swinging in to an HDR look a little too much for my liking. Maybe a blend of something like this would help pop it a bit more. Sky look good though!

I think I'm gonna just have to re-shoot it! I'm working in that building for while, and the sunsets should come earlier in the next two months. Just need to be around when a good one comes my way. The M9 will, of course be with me at all times anyway, like normal !

Cheers, Nick.

I'm sure I'm the odd man out here, but why are you worried about the way you were proceding in the first place? The overall effect of the photo is very good (albeit I'm looking at it on my iPad).

I'd go for a very subtle and natural post process and just tweak the colours a little. Perhaps follow Jaap's advice, but in a layer and then slide the amount until you thinkit's tops.

There is some of that golden sky in the river ... That would make sense to pop that a little.

But go softly. Too much FLASH BANG WALLOP HDR stuff out there.
