AlanG Posted July 30, 2011 Share #21 Posted July 30, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Leica you better do! If NEX-7 works as rumoured and if Sony plucks its courage (in reality see market potential) to venture into mirrorless full frame they would be outselling Leica by colossal margin. That goes without saying, but Leica will only need a relatively small share of the market with its APS system. And if the M10 has live view and a good clip on EVF, it will give Leica some additional possibilities too. If a 24 megapixel APS format camera works well, the "requirement" of full frame by some photographers will diminish in favor of a smaller and lighter system at a lower price. That being said, how hard would it be for Sony to make a full frame camera that is similar to any of its mirrorless Alpha models should it decide there was a market for it? Sony has means & knowhow to do all sort of things, even disregard for sound business decision making so i wish they go astray and offer FF mirrorless with good EVF probably sooner than Leica. There is difference between APS-C and FF sensor size, I like to see my 50mm lens work as 50mm lens, if i need crop I will rather get 75mm. Megapixel count is just number that makes marketing people good about their business achievements, it doesn't enhance photography.

Tell Phase One and other MF camera users that megapixels don't matter. Yes I know why different people prefer different lenses and formats and the diminishing returns of having more megapixels on a given size piece of silicon after a point. (This is always improving.) But if an APS size camera gives people most or all of what they need, then full frame will lose some importance to many. I am not referring to simply using your M lenses on an APS camera, but an entirely new system. I think it won't be long before more people will look at APS cameras as we used to look at 35mm cameras and they will look at full frame cameras as we used to look at medium format. Indeed, is someway already like this , today... many pros are seen around with APS DSLRs.... and, as a rough evaluation, the share of them using FF DSLRs is someway comparable to the MF pro users (typically Hasselblad) in respect to the 35mm pro users (typically Ni/Ca) at film times... janki Posted July 31, 2011 Share #25 Posted July 31, 2011 Is it not so that there is a Sony Alpha 99, FF, with translucent mirror in the pipeline somewhere? If so, this camera is likely in able to turn knockout of any camera we know today in terms of performance relative to size and weight. It will probably be ready for the market long before Leica even manage to show us the outline of its new EVIL camera.

But that doesn't mean that Leica can't have a camera in the APS EVIL segment in a year or so that will sell enough to be worthwhile. And if Leica doesn't start down this path now, where will they be in 5 years?
peterv Posted July 31, 2011 Share #27 Posted July 31, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sony have said they'll bring one or maybe even two new FF camera's. The A99 is due next year.
mmradman Posted August 1, 2011 Share #28 Posted August 1, 2011 And if Leica doesn't start down this path now, where will they be in 5 years? Back into crisis management. Selling handful of S2 cameras/lenses and handful of M lenses to M9+derivatives saturated market is not going to keep business profitable. Without growth and product diversification income stream will dwindle to 6-bitting old M lenses and replacing cracked M9 sensors on out of warranty cameras - providing Kodak still offers support. By then many shooters me included will be happily using legacy M & R lenses on various Japanese hybrids. Worst case - Leica lens prices on second hand market may even collapse. peterv Posted August 1, 2011 Share #29 Posted August 1, 2011 Let's hope this grim scenario will not happen. No one will benefit from a weak Leica company. It will be interesting to see though, what they'll come up with to bring a new generation of photographers to the brand. It'll have to be something quite unique, innovative and perhaps also with an interesting alternative design to stand out from the wave of ILC's coming our way. mmradman Posted August 2, 2011 Share #30 Posted August 2, 2011 Rumour has it Sony will announce NEX-7 with built in EVF on 24 August 2011. sonyalpharumors | Home There will be also NEX-5N with optional EVF, watch out Leica. My understanding is that both cameras will have advanced CMOS (to support live view) APS-C sensors.
