Dear forum members,

Making a trip to Korea in a couple of months and wanted to buy a tripod, my very first.

I would like to know specifically about the leica mini tripod foldable with the ball head. Is it convenient to use as well as carry?

Does anyone use it? If yes can they impart their experience?

Many thanks and best regards,

Amod

I have the Leica tripod, but with a substitute Manfrotto 482 head. Makes for a smaller, but still stable, unit...even as a 'chest pod' just to add stability.

I rarely use it, however, as there are various techniques to stabilize a small camera without resorting to a tripod. For instance, Lars has been known to describe his rifle technique (I use a variation), and others use 'string pods' etc. The search will pull up many discussions.

There are also dozens of threads on the forum regarding small travel tripods for use with the M. Here is but one...use the search to find many more.

I use the Leica tripod with the Leica head. I have bought it for about 30 years together with my first Leica, a M 6. The qualitiy of tripod and head is outstanding - maybe there ar lighter ones. It fitted in my original Leica leather case for body and 2 lenses I had at the time with my M 6 and today it fits together with my Leica Billigham case in the front section. For taking it with you in just a pocket it will be bulky - with exception when using an angler´s vest (used for flyfishing normally, but very good thing for photographs too).

I've used the Minox tripod (3rd from the left in the photo) for a few years and it's been excellent. Two of the legs and the remote release are stored inside the third leg, which makes it a super-compact and lightweight tripod. They're not available new anymore but they appear on the online auction site from time to time.

I have the Leica tripod and head. It has the most reassuring locking mechanism but is a bit heavy. As an alternative, consider the Gorillapod which is the most versatile for clamping to hotel balconies or a chair back inside temples etc. Choose the bigger one for strength and stability. I added the Manfrotto 494 head which is compact, strong and equally versatile.

I'd go for a Gitzo Traveler GT1550T... Very good, small, sexy and unfortunately quite expensive (around 700 EUR). But I had several tripods before and I wish bought this nice piece much earlier!! (Like the M9 ;)
