Will there be a X2?

With all the talk about a new mirror less Leica on the way I'm curious as to what this means for the progression of the X1. I thought the X2 may incorporate a viewfinder to keep ground with the X100 but now with the new system having an EVF as well I wonder if there's room for both at such a high price point. What are your thoughts?

Yes, I'm aware of that I'm also also aware the way they talk about this new system it sounds like what the X2 would ideally be sans interchangeable lenses. At 2000k is the X1-2 viable against this new system. I'm curious to here people ideology on the subject. Hopefully you are right they will simply coexist.

I recently sold my Nex 5 to buy the X1. :D There is a lot of hype about interchangeable lens cameras - sometimes called "compact system cameras" - but the one thing they are not is compact. The Nex 5 with the 16mm (or GF2 with 14mm) pancake lens IS compact, but add the 18-55 zoom (or the 18-200 zoom) and "compact" goes right out the window. The micro 4/3rds and sony e-system lenses are generally not of the best optical quality, which is one reason why I bought the X1 - the best IQ in a compact camera; I also don't need video, art filters and all the other fancy electronics that consumers seem to expect. I hope Leica does produce an X2 as the successor to the X1, but with a fixed lens like the X1. If they want to produce a "compact system camera", they need to concentrate on IQ and lens quality, but that will come at a price!

In the meantime, I am going to enjoy my X1 for some years to come. It's that sort of a camera.

Keep the x2 small. Add features but only if they can keep the same size or make it even smaller. Amazing IQ in the smallest possible size.

I just wish I knew when it will come out.

Welcome iiNexus!

As to your last point. Why? Life does not stand still for you. If you need a compact quality with excellent image quality, you can enjoy the X1 right now. I doubt that the X2, should it surface, will yield better pictures than the X1 in the hands of a genuinely dedicated 'thinking' photographer. Response times may speed up, but IQ is already at a very high level.

If you read past threads from the doubters, the criticisms generally stem from the X1's perceived weaknesses as a P &S or 'street' camera. I don't think Leica ever really targeted that group of consumers. The camera is capable of achieving a higher level of performance in many sectors, in the right hands.

You're correct, X1 has the size and quality. I am their targeted user for this camera. However, if they were to introduce an X2 this year that would add an f2 lens or video or a bit faster focussing or faster file save times or slightly better macro capabilities, I would wait. There are a lot of tradeoffs for going small but with a second generation there's obviously improvements. Despite the great reviews for the Fuji X100, it's just too big for my needs. You're right about not standing still. If an update doesn't come out for another year, I will pull the trigger now and enjoy for a full year.

If the update doesn't come out for another year? Would that be the update announcement, or availability of the actual product? I'd pull that trigger now and start enjoying.

I am new to Leica so I'm not yet familiar with how frequently they update their products. With many companies, it's usually predictable, but with Leica, it doesn't appear to be. I also realize that even if they announce the X2, it may not get released for another 6 months. After that, there could be a backlog for another 6 months.

But for $2000, I am gonna do my due diligence before I commit. It's probably just a few more days of procrastinating before ordering :)

I have a compact and DSLR, but I was looking for something compact that gave me DSLR quality. This led me to the D-LUX5 at first, but the IQ wasn't there for me. I considered the X100 but that was too big. That's how I ended up at the X1.

I know what ya mean. I had the LX3 (DL4 equiv.) for a year, and while I could get usable images indoors at most events at ISO 800 using a monopod, the X1 has much lower noise at higher ISO's, so I can shoot handheld indoors at a reasonable shutter speed.

Replace the pop up flash with a pop up viewfinder with AF confirmation and +/-exposure warning, f2 40mm equivalent Summicron lens with MF ring and distance scale, dedicated iso dial, faster AF, better lcd screen, improve build quality. Keep IQ, size and weight as is. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

+ 1 especially integrated viewfinder and higher manufacturing quality, top plate is very weak.

  • 2 months later...

I really hope that X2 will come. X1 was a good start, but competition keeps coming up with new stuff and better specs.

My wishes:

- a bit better sensor (24 Mpix is NOT necessary)

- APS-C is fine (otherwise the size and price will go up too much).

- no AA filter - seriously. Raw files should have M9 quality.

- faster AF (should be easy)

- keep it compact and simple

- bit better finish and more sturdy controls - look at GXR.

- maybe 35/2.0 lens

- built in EVF? not sure, but if not than there should be nice AMOLED clip on finder. Or even OVF with some exposure information, AF confirmation and parallax corrected frame lines.

- keep the price below 2000€

I was actually considering the X1 against GXR and X100 some time ago. I really liked the leatherette on the fully black X1. I went with GRDIII mainly for size reasons, but found the X1 nice.

A Noctilux for a camera with an APS-C sensor could be smaller in all three dimensions and much lighter as well.

30 - 50 % lighter would still be too much I guess. And even if the price would be also 30 to 50% less than the "big" Noctilux, it would still be too high.

But if the point was that X2 should also be released with 50mm lens - I am fine with that :)

So - the X2 will come in two versions with 35/2.0 and 50/2.0 lens - do we agree on that? ;)
